Please forgive me - but I've read, and read - and now I'm confused. Am I correct in believing that the 2gb cards CANNOT be used with the latest Nokia factory installed 06 OS but can ONLY be used in the hacked 2007 ver?

No, you are not correct. See release notes for 2.2006.39-14

2GB it is supported in last two official firmwares.
