Vivek,
I don't think your understanding is correct. I got one of the 'first day phone' from a priority dealer in India. The dealer called me as soon as he received the stock of 10 phones. I saw the lot in his office as he was entering the list in his PC and picked one. It's a Korean make. My warranty also is registered.
One more thing I wanted to add related to this thread is I downloaded the global firmware and flashed it. It has got integrated skype. I was able to make Video call over 3G and Wi-Fi. That is the main reason I bought this model.
regards
MRaj

DoT officials said popular internet telephony firm Skype would also be given a 15-day deadline to ensure that calls carried by it to and from India are in formats that could be intercepted by law enforcement agencies here.

and here in this forum also http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41010 you said
Now, if I flash it, will the warranty get void?
and is there a nice tutorial to Flash Maemo in N900 for first timers?
And the handset is purchased from a Nokia Priority dealer.
