Every time I try to play an MP3 on my one month old n900 using the mediaplayer it never works. It just sits at the "current track" screen looking like it is just about to play the song but then it just gets stuck. You can hit all the buttons but nothing happens. Occasionally there is an "Operation Failed" message. This happens with both videos and music files. I know the audio works because I can play things in Kmplayer (but the the interface for that sucks) and I can hear the "swooshy" sounds as I flip through the menus. MediaBox just crashes.

The only way I can get it to start playing again is if I purge and then reinstall the "decoders-support" package. But then if I restart the phone it won't play anything again.

I'm starting to regret paying $500 for this. The little things are getting annoying...

What version firmware are you running. The latest 1.2 version is very good and the media player works well.

There is no need to install the extra decoders package if you are just playing MP3s. It does take the fone a few mins to index files added, especially if there are loads.

I am running 1.2. I haven't flashed the firmware or overclocked the phone. I can't remember doing anything out of the ordinary that caused this to happen. It just stopped working on a random day.

Right, that's what I figured. But when I install these packages, I see the notification that the "media daemon is restarting". When that happens, mediaplayer starts playing my files again. I tried poking around in "/etc/init.d/" to see if I could manually do this restart but didn't find anything.

I can't help it that my parents gave me this name when I was born; they were a bunch of hippies. Please don't judge.

Yeah this is still busted. The only fix (in case anybody else is wondering) is to reinstall a bunch of packages for the mediaplayer. That will restart it and get your $500 phone to play music again.

The decoders-support package does the following when installed:

postinst

You can just copy the lines after the "Restarting media daemons" into a shell script and run that -- works for me.
