I'm sure many of the users in US & Canada on Rogers or AT&T have noticed their devices swapping from 2G and 2.5G - GPRS and EDGE sometimes.

I'm wondering if it's possible to force the device down to 2G GPRS mode. If anybody knows, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Um, why? The device can't prefer 2.5g over 2g or the other way around. 2.5g modulations are only ever used if actual packet data needs to be used. At other times, the same command channels are used with both 2g and 2.5g.

If it's constantly "switching", it just means that at&t has a very patchy network with mixed ancient base stations and new basestations, and that you are in poor coverage if it's constantly changing between different cell towers..

Isn't GPRS 2.5G actually?

You should tell the GSM Association that. They seem to think that
GPRS is 2,5G and EDGE is 2.75G.

ROFL, enchanted data rates! I love it

I thought that "2G" the was original slow GSM packet data at <56kbit/s. "2.5G" (or GPRS) was the original enhanced data rate of 56-115kbit/s and the first upgrade step from the original system towards "3G". This was, I thought, followed by "2.75G" or EDGE which used new and more efficient data coding and achieved rates up to 3x that of "2.5G" (up to 230-ish kbit/s)

Or do I have that wrong?
