POP3 email has unfortunately been broken since PR1.2, and the official bug-fix doesn't seem to be much of a priority

I have an email address which is set up to check the server for mail every five minutes.
I spend most of my time in any one of a number of WiFi hotspots which are set up as "Internet Connections".
If a message was available, it would "load" on to the N900 at the five minute update interval, and the blue notification light would flash.
If there was no message, clicking on the email icon (:@"), it would say "Last updated on XX:XX (time)".
Recently, it seems these updates are not happening automatically.
When I click on the email icon (:@"), it tells me "Last updated Refreshing".
It may not update for several hours, or not at all, or then again, for no reason that I can see, it will eventually do what it is supposed to do.
I have Maemo 5 version 10.2010.19-1.002 installed.
I reinstalled that software, and set up all functions new.
However, I still have the same problem.
Help, anyone???
Thanks!
