You fail to describe what problem you're trying to solve (apart from "I have nude pictures of my girl on it. *blush*") and from whom you want to hide your home made pr0n.

Identify the attacker first and then look for solutions. I'll make a list and you can figure out what you actually want:

- Nosy "friend", no Linux knowledge
- Nosy "friend", with Linux knowledge
- Random person who finds your lost device
- Serious person who finds your lost device
- Serious person who steals your device
- The government (in the shape of border control)
- The government (in the shape of the police)
- The government (in the shape of a special branch)

Now to solutions:

- Lock your device by pushing the power button and selecting "Secure device"
- Place your sensitive data in a not obvious place
- Create a directory with a name starting with "."
- Place your data in an archive (zip, tar.gz, rar)
- Place your data in a password protected archive (zip)
- Place your archive in a not obvious place
- Encrypt your data (PGP, GPG)
- Create an encrypted file system as a file to be mounted and save your data there
- Create an encrypted file system as a partition that has to be mounted and save your data there
- Create an encrypted file system inside an encrypted file system to create some kind of plausible deniability

Also, keep in mind that the N900 wasn't designed to be a spook tool. SMS messages are stored in a data base and to hide some messages, you'll need to, as far as I know, hide them all. Images are indexed for a reason so trying to hide them goes against the design.

Lol awesome post Joorin, fully agree with all aspects bro! However, the indexing can be circumnavigated by creating the directory beginning with a "." or alternatively calling a directory simply "Private" and both of these methods mean that the indexing tool won't search or index the contents of those directories. Your Nr0p is safe in there....

I especially like the bit about an encrypted filesystem within an encrypted filesystem to gain plausible deniability. Right now trying to figure out a way to blowfish encrypt data before hiding within an AES256-SHA mountable partition with individual sector boot codes, because if the CIA ever get their hands on some of the MMS messages my girl sends me then I'm screwed!

Dammit, I forgot - they monitor the airways anyway......

Ah well. Never mind. Guess I'll just have to keep the phone in my pocket then......

Hmmmmmmmm......Dude i didnt say i keep my girl friend's nude pics in my mobile....dats sick...........i just wanted to keep my personal pics just to me.....and thats not home made porn

But what u said about creating a file using "." is a good idea.

But it'll be good if we have a nice GUI based App for this

so tell me are u going to do something about this App???

And then you'll have to wait much longer for your images to load, potentially turning your "tug of war" into a (more) miserable experience.

My comment about design was made to clarify that the functionality wanted in this thread wasn't part of how the device was planned to be used.

Ah well. Never mind. Guess I'll just have to keep the phone in my pocket then......
And this might actually be enough for 95% of the users...

You can't create this file on the phone - you cannot create a file beginning with a "." in a linux environment (although I'm probably gonna get shot down for that one, it just seems to ring true from somewhere else is all), so it needs to be done in a Windows environment using Command Prompt and the mkdir command. There is probably not going to be a GUI coded to run WinSCP and SSH to create this directory locally on a windows machine using the WEP / WAP security on the WiFi routers and then transfer the file to a directory of your choosing o nthe phone!

Mate, the time you have spent banging on about this app you could have done all the above, set it up, explained to your "cute" girlfriend where everythihng is and how to get there etc etc. Come on man, pull your finger out and DIY.

Steady on there fella, I was agreeing with you - read back and you'll see my previous posts in this thread point s33 towards a DIY approach rather than the app he wants. I'm on your side....!

As an aside, I have both the Private and .hidden folders and it hasn't slowed my phone down at all - to the best of my knowledge anyway.

I don't need an app with a slick GUI to get things done - even though I'm no linux bod or guru, Google is your best friend, along with TMO anyways....

Check the alternative file managers, they should be able to rename files to .names. I hope that's enough GUI. You still didn't answer from whom you want to hide the things, hidden folders may work when hiding from kids and some friends but not from the police or CIA or anyone using his brain (well, I know this is opposed to most police men) (think of photorec, it will copy all images to the computer from a device, even many deleted ones).
And if you want the GUi so badly (which seems to be the case, as you bump this thread everyday (bumping is rude, too)) there are two possibilities:
  • Create the app yourself, with things like the QT SDK even monkeys can write N900 apps
  • Wait for someone to make it, but they won't make it faster if you ask every hour. So, really, please wait but don't bump every hour.

Peng (should be a shooting sound). Where did you get that you can't create a file beginning with a dot in linux? The N900 doesn't allow it because it would hide the file and then you could't get it back with this file manager, that's just noob protection. A simple "mv file .file" in any linux terminal on any linux computer in the world will hide a file. But try creating a folder named con on a windows machine
