So my boss would like to know what is the best way to tackle the fact that the company standard is MS Office. Our vpn allows us to use the n800 to access outlook web mail.....but then the attachments are all in MS Office land.

Thoughts on tools, apporaches, etc that may alleviate the reading of the attachments once they are downloaded?

I know it isn't any immediate help there is a team working on getting a tablet version of Ubuntu out with the OpenOffice suite. Supposed to be looking at the n800 platform.

Pray for Nokia to license Picsel viewer for the NIT platform.

Read M$ Word attachments with document reader - which converts them in pdf, viewable on your IT, or text.

Or, abiword can read Word files, albeit with some limitations, until Megabyte405 posts an updated port. To get abiword, search the forums. I've had better results with the 2.2.7 version, but a 2.4.6 is also available.

Hmm...while Nokia doesn't own Picsel outright they are a "partner".
Perhaps one of the two folks on the tablet team at Nokia who actually glance in here once in a while can take a gander at seeing if it's possible to port over a re-compiled version of their viewer?

Picsel viewer has released versions two mobile Linux variants (Zaurus and one of the Motorola 'smartphones') on top of the Windows Mobile and Palm version.

'docreader' seems to be what best matches the OP's use case. Haven't tried it myself though.

My 2€cent...What about using Microb and Google Docs for viewing word related content (or similar web appliance)?

You can even just use ordinary google mail and the standard browser, gmail will translate the .doc file to html for you and let you display it. This works quite well indeed.

I didn't suggest this to the OP because in a corporate environment it's almost a given that you're not entitled to forward in-house email to an external entity like google.
