I can build the power injector and all, but not having a host mode really puts me off.I mainly bought the tablet for development and interfacing. The N770 supports it now through a hack.

Couldn't Nokia just release an unofficial driver?

I'm finding different ways to interface now, through bluetooth that is.

Just read your post, and it alerted me to the fact that usb host doesn't seem to work properly on the n800 -- when I looked more closely all the information about power injectors, etc, was for the 770.

I was planning to get a n800 (to replace my aging 770, that's somewhere in Cloud Nokia Repair Land) and string a usb HDD to it so that I could move photos onto there from my digital camera whilst traveling. I have a nasty feeling that I am not now going to be able to do this . . .

I followed the link you provided, but these seem to be for an older kernel (2.6.18) -- I'm assuming that they don't work for the latest firmware. Has anyone managed to get a working usb host with their n800, or is this another of my dreams that I'm going to have to so cruelly abandon?

Yup it's for an older kernel, but the guy has to be given credit.

I sometimes ask this on the irc channel too, but there don't seem to be enough developers involved in this right now.

The N800 does have an OTG (on the go) chip which supplies around 100ma, enough for a keyboard, pen drive, UART-USB adapters(which is what I'm after since the N800 does not have any serial ports).You can see the specifications on thought fix's blog.

There is one UART behind the battery cover, but that gives startup roll information at boot time. Theres no /dev/ttyS0.

One way is to use bluetooth Serial Port Profile. But the adapters are like $70 plus compared to a $20 around USB Serial adapter...And the kernel has builtin drivers for it too.

And as you said.. apart from my needs, host mode for external flash memory.

Added my vote. I still think that there should be a common login system for bugzillas, I seem to have so many different accounts with different systems, it's a pain just remembering which ones I've already registered for.

I'm now stuck as to how I'm going to deal with my photos when I'm traveling, if I can't use a n800 to move them to a hdd. Tempted to get all the kit and hope a solution appears to this while I'm away (for five months). Does anybody know if I'm likely to be able to use a USB HDD with computers I find in India?

you could just pick up one of these 2.5" hard drive enclosures that copies files from flash cards.

of course you'd have to get a hard drive to use with it, but the total cost and ease of use makes it a good deal. my dad uses this enclosure to backup his photos and loves it.

Now that looks like a good idea, thanks! Now just need to find someone who stocks it in England . . .
