is there an app that can for a short time overclock the nokia n900 on the phone itself

Titan's kernel can handle this. You can overclock via the x-terminal, but you can also make a button on your homescreen with QueenBeeconWidget. More info over here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Kernel_Power

There's
QCPUFreq...
You will need to install Kernel Power (aka "Titan's Kernel") to be able to overclock using this app.
You would probably also do Yourself and Your N900 a favor by reading about overclocking first (voltages etc.)...
One thing though. It's not possible to select 600MHz in QCPUFreq (don't know why?), but You can reboot or ask the developer to check it.
