It was a long time ago, when they first shown Tegra (and some concept devices) at ECS. I can't find it now.

I think a mini analogue controller such as on psp would be a step in right direction and wouldnt add much bulk. Other than that I just think gaming machine and phone will never exist as there will always be compromise, you can buy a psp or ds for just over £100, far better option, the control lay out needed for proper gaming would make any phone just too big, IMO..

Well, like I originally stated, to be able to push out many different features in such a compact device you need to make some compromises. And with this concept I tried to capture what I believe is the pinnacle between compromise and features.

By choosing the N97 tilt slide design, it is possible to make the device much smaller since it is basically 2-stories (screen level and button level). But why the "tilt" slide? Well it allows for more finger room so the shoulder/camera buttons are more accesible. It is as good as the original PSP's shoulder buttons but not as obstructive as the PSP-Go's.

And why the dimensions I've listed? Well it allows for a large screen (just over 5"s!!!) and larger spaced buttons (like for gaming) and it allows for all the features to be able to be able to be squeezed in ... ie I am not just giving a random mock-up, I'm keeping it realistic.

It could probably work via Bluetooth or USB

Well anything is possible. But it is highly unlikely to match in terms of performance, quality and long-term endurance. Which is why I thought dedicated controls with the option of an attachable QWERTY is more ideal for those that want to carry 1 device instead of their smartphone and console.

I'm 6'4" with massive hands so I'm probably not the prime target of handhelds, however :P
I have to agree that the PSP (2000) is a much better portable console than a DSi. I have used both and own none. In terms of games, the PSP is way ahead (even though it was made years before) but for mucking around the DSi is more fun. Btw I'm 178cm (yes metric system rules) and my hands are XL size, I can grip a basketball one-handedly.

Well I feel your pain, it would be awesome to have an Omnia ... a single device we take for multiple purposes. And the market has only recently started aiming towards that vision. So far the iPhone 4, N900, Droid, Nexus One are the only devices that joins "gaming machine" and "phone" into one package although all are pretty/somewhat disappointing gaming machine. And you're right there will always be a compromise, and this was the reason behind my concept: To find the optimal niche where the two could co-exsist.
Well you could buy an old PSP and a HTC Dream (G1) for price or strive for ultimate portability (only one device) and own something like I've designed.

It might be worth asking http://www.hardkernel.com/products.php developers whether Android is the only way to go on this device.

Bought a PSP go a week ago and sold it the same day. Hurts my hands too. Hell even the n900 keyboard is better :-)

Thanks smoku ... I will give those guys a heads up and perhaps they can use their resources to build the entire frame (hardware) of the device and pair it with Froyo and a OMAP 44x for the time being.

@Rugoz, yeah I heard the controls were placed too closely that it causes aches after an extended period. I tried the PGo in-store just to check it out (I knew it couldn't hold a light to the 2000s/3000s) and it was fairly comfortable for my giant* hands. Again it was slightly small, so for extended periods it could lead to discomfort/aches but I don't know.
Reason why I'm posting in regards to this is that some people have perceived my design as related to the Go's schematics. Well its not, its sligthly larger and better sized/distance and doesn't have any anoying "nubs" instead has actual "joysticks".

*Giant hands = I can grab, grip, lift and manupilate a fully inflated official sized basketball with only 1 hand if it is unsweaty or not a very smooth ball

HERE IS MY UPDATED GAMING SMARTPHONE:

Last time I made it a beast that boasted many features. This time I've picked and pruned some to make it a somewhat simpler yet relevant (to upcoming) device.

Changes:
- Got rid of the second microphone that was used for noise cancellation (this feature doesn't work well on most devices, eg Nexus One, so it was okay to be nicked)
- Got rid of the super sweet retro volume wheel (reminiscent of the gameboy age, where it would click at the end to close -- too complicated for todays smartphones; it got nicked)
- Got rid of the IrDA on the top of the device, so it no longer can be used as a universal infrared remote, but I thought that idea was a little impractical due to space restrictions on the device
- Got rid of the camera lens... its a moving object which could scratch/become faulty, so now the lens protrudes a little but protected by metal ring (htc 7 mozart).
- The device used to open to the left side, now it opens to the right, so the L1+L2 shoulder pads could act as volume rocker (since we removed the volume wheel)
- The lanyard hole needed to be moved, now situated for the left side/wrist (can't make it right handed without botching something up)
- Removed the dual mini speakers (on gamepad) and instead made 2 beefy speakers that surround the screen (louder and better experience)
- Added the standard android buttons (back, home, menu) on bottom left (for right handed people) making it a better experience
- Updated the dimensions; display shrunk from 5.2->4.8", slightly longer but thinner (realistically) but still pocketable, slightly lighter (compare this to n900/milestone/atrix)
- Now it includes dual camera's stretched 8cm away from each other (for 3D)
- Because of the new arrangement of the camera's, the back aluminium case just rips off like the samsung vibrant/galaxy s i9000 (which is less stylish but more practical)
- Camera has been beefed up a little; 8MP, 2D 1080p 30fps, 3D 720p 30fps ... and the front facing is now 2MP (not vga)
- Other specs have been altered: (realistically) larger battery, 4g (lte/wimax/utms 850mhz) inclusion, better display (qHD + GalaxyS2 screen type), based on a real processor (TI)
- I thought about a 3D display, but it would be pointless with a shutter glasses, impossible with passive glasses (tech not developed for mobile)
- Only possible is parallax display, but I used the 3DS over the weekend and the experience was "meh" for the majority --- so its unnecessary to place the cost and tech into this gaming phone
