The entry on http://maemo.org/downloads/product/evince/ states that Evince runs on IT OS 2007 and on IT OS 2006. But the current version 0.9 is only in the "bora" respository. When I experimentally added this to my repositories in the app manager and tried to install on my 770 (2006 OS), I got a lot of missing files/dependencies.

So is the entry on the evince page on maemo.org a mistake? Or can I get the current version of evince to run on my 770?

I had 0.5.2 installed, but it was a bit slow and I could not find the rotate function (or is it there in 0.5.2, and where?).

Thanks.

0.9 should install without incident if you add the other necessary repositories or install via apt-get install evince while root in the xterm.

I'm currently running it right now on my 770 without issues - and with unrar, unzip, and zip installed - as well as a MIME change, it's now reading cbr/cbz as well (comics). The instructions are here on this site, I could locate them for you, or just search for cbr and it'll show up.

Thanks, it is helpful to know that 0.9 can work on the 770.

However, I have not been able to resolve the dependencies with the 0.9 version from repository.maemo.org/extras bora free non-free.

Whether I use the application manager or apt-get does not seem to make a difference.

I seem to miss the right versions of libfontconfig1, libfreetype6, hildon-fm1, hildon-libs0, libgconf2-6, and libosso1.

And I don't know were to get them, or even if I should.

I am tempted to try the 2007HE. Is there a chance that this makes it easier?

Thanks again for your help.

... and I did search for "cbr" on the forum. But what I found seemed even more confusing. People tried out different things, but I am not sure what is applicable to me (i.e. evince 0.9 on OS2006).

Ok, here is how I finally solved it:

Flashed the 2007HE.
Installed Evince as the first app, simply by going to http://downloads.maemo.org/product/evince and clicking Install Now.

No problems, installed cleanly.

Evince 0.9.0 on my 770 and rotation works!

Can you really use cbr/cbz files on a 770 with the latest version of evince?
On my 800, evince 0.9 can't even see cbr-files anymore.
Does that mean I screwed something up, or is it a different on 770s and 800s?

Evince 0.9 is running on my 770 with 2007HE, but I cannot say anything about cbr/cbz. My interest was in reading normal PDFs in the rotated view.

Did you follow the suggestions by gerbick in this thread, i.e. searching for cbr in the forum, quite a few threads about the cbr problem come up and I seem to remember somebody had solved the problem. Not sure though.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip.
I think I found what you mean in this thread.
But when I tried to enter the dpkg-command in x-term, it refused, saying I was no superuser. And I'll be the last to deny that. I really have to invest time in finding my way around Linux someday.

Yep... I got it to work, use it all of the time. The thread is mentioned above, here it is again... via Xterm, sudo gainroot, move to the location right next to the file mentioned/downloaded from post #7, dpkg -i shared-mime-info_0.17-0indt1_armel.deb when Evince 0.9 is installed, make sure that you have unzip, unrar, and zip all installed as well... and it should work without a hitch.

And yes... I have it working on my 2007he (whatever the very last version that was released is, I'm being lazy and not booting it up right now) and Evince 0.9. Just a bit slow on the start up, but it works great.

I think for some reason, any upgrade(s) on Evince will mess up those MIME changes though from an earlier version.

Don't quote me on that... I dunno what happened with prior installs, I install and ran only 0.9 after finding that fix.
