Let me quote the "hidden" secret from the Ovi store website:

3.2.4. Ovi Store prices, which may be subject to change from time to time, will be presented to you in different currencies depending on your location and shall be identified in the payment information at the time of the placement of your order. Prices include applicable taxes in effect at the time of your transaction, unless otherwise stated. Regardless of the currency used or the price shown to you by Nokia, there may be instances where you incur additional charges from your bank or credit card provider based on currency conversion rates used and/or additional fees assessed. Nokia assumes no responsibility for the payment of such fees or charges.

I still find it odd that Nokia cannot set up multiple locations for payment centers. They are an international company. Makes sense to do business in a way that's more inviting to customers as opposed to the way it's currently set up.

Well that and allow PayPal. The whole store seems incomplete.

Well there are always some extra taxes added if you buy from an EU country, but I see that it is not your case...
If you are sure that this additional tax was not there in the Ovi's calculations done just before you click the final "Pay now" button... i think you can even sue them in EU (dunno about that in US)....

PayPal? Wouldn't matter as it's the same -- they (PayPal) charge trasaction fee.

Before you jump and say it's not true bear in mind I'm from Europe, more precisely from Slovenia where PayPal is already pretty limited -- can link only credit card to PP account, can't recive money directly to bank accout, etc ...

Now, you wanna say when buying online you *always* pay only amount stated on page? That's what I find outrageous

I should never have to pay VAT. If I have to pay for currency changes, then the apps should not be shown in my native currency. If I see something online and I purchase it in British Pound Sterling, I will then anticipate a conversion fee or some sort.

And when I order from overseas (I'm American) websites, they tend to state that there are fees per transaction before I complete the sale. The fact that I have to read a paragraph elsewhere, memorize it, and the store not tell me that upon checkout... sorry. I find that seriously lacking.

Most savvy users will know about the fees. Some have to be reminded. And if not PayPal, tap into MoneyBookers. I have an account there too - of no use to me whilst in the US for the most part.

The dependence on credit card only purchases limits Ovi.

From my experience conversion fee is almost gone (from online shopping) and most sites offer automatic currency conversion mostly for buyers conveniance to have an idea how much will cost in native currency.

World is divided into regions (just look at DVD's), heck even in Europe same stuff (ie. magazines) have printed different prices on covers despite having common monetary unit (VAT is already included). And these prices are not based on geographic distance ...

Oh, and another one -- it's not uncommon to have USD/EUR rate set to 1:1 -- I should pay less, but in reality I pay more

TBH, american company's started splitting markets into world regions and I'm quite happy to see (for once) US residents complaining over such bussiness model.

As for credit card dependance -- PayPal is not present worldwide and as such not preferred choice. Also, if you have PP account it's obvious you have credit card as it's required for basic operations.

i dont have a credit card and i have had a pay pal account for 8 years. all that is required is your bank account details for a paypal account. you have the option to have backup funding with a credit card if you want to.

Then why are people getting hit with conversion fees via Ovi? It's not fully gone. And I purchase a lot of stuff from stores in countries I used to live in - Germany, Japan and a couple of other spots. And I've seen conversion fees from my bank or credit card on some; but not all transactions. If it happens, fine. Just let me know before I commit to the sale.

I place the blame squarely on Hollywood for this one - as well as the whole PAL/NTSC/SECAM debacle. Blu-ray is different though - different regions.

I'd argue this point. I don't see it that way. Different export/import laws per country enforce the fragmentation of the markets, unfortunately.

I do have a credit card. But I don't have to have one to have a PayPal account. Just a bank account.

Paypal charges something like 3.5% fee only if you use credit card. Other source of funding (direct bank account or paypal balance) costs less or nil.

They certainly don't charge $1.50 for a $1.99 transaction.
