It feels as though we, Nokia N900 users, have been abandoned. There is no commitment or communication from Nokia of further software updates and it is unclear whether MeeGo will be coded to work on the N900. It's a shame as the N900 is a good device but it is let down by software bugs.

I don't think this is a n00bish question at all, and furthermore it keeps me from having to make a new thread with a new question.

To my knowledge, this is still the ONLY "phone"-sized device made that contains a *FULL* OS (unlike Android) and is mostly unlocked (unlike Apple). To have this much horsepower combined with this much hardware anywhere else requires a larger form-factor (eee-PC comes to mind).

One idea I've had for a while is to use it as a more portable version of a netbook or small notebook, especially combined with one of those roll-up keyboards such as this (as an example):

To my knowledge, you can't do this with Android or i*; I don't know about M$ mobile OS's but I refuse to use such things. And this is not to mention such wonderful things as SIP, Skype, or running Apache in your pocket!

Oh yeah, I've wanted this ever since it came out, but I haven't been able to justify the cost so I was waiting for it to come down--and it has, somewhat. But now, reading all of this has given me *BIG* pause!

So the US$500 (or so) question to all of you out there: knowing what you know now, as owners who have (hopefully) owned the N900 for a while, and knowing that Nokia no longer supports it *BUT* the community does, would you tell me to buy it or not? If not, what DO you recommend?

What the community really needs from Nokia are documented APIs to the hardware and applications providing primary functionality (phone, e-mail, internet, audio, etc) unclosed or
allow primary functionality apps to be written by community.

They only need to provide updates and bug fixes to what they keep closed, so they only are making more work for themselves or increasing resentment by keeping things closed up that do not need to be kept closed up.

Nokia had nothing to do with FCam and its amazing versatility. Just met up with my old roommate, a working globetrotting photographer, and showed him the hdr and .dng options it had and all the manual control with the app, and blew him away. The last fw update brought functional vidchat via google and skype on 2.5g in the states and blew many friends away by it, and Nokia had zero to do with that also...*more sarcasm*

I am still using my N810 as a media box for my music library and streaming internet radio with my surround sound and I even web browse via Tear with it too many years later from purchase date. That is from the community efforts with great FREE programs easily obtained.

No, Nokia will not hold your hand and guide you to what the devices can do with a locked OS like Apple, or have a closed off limited kernel like Android, but with a lil know how and elbow grease it still blows most smartphones away. My friend just got the Galaxy S on my recommendation since he was coming from a G1, and yeah it is a nice phone, but when I showed him the pics from my phone, snes emulation, and IR controlled his tv, he was like **** I wish I knew how to do that.

I will say this now, the N900 is the first real "superphone", its true capabilities aren't that easily obtained by the avg user, but for anyone with a lil technical know how, wow is it a beast. Thankfully QT apps are now in the works and will be let loose Q4 into next year and Nokia can solve the percieved "app problem" for those who want to click and use, and gain crossplatform support with this toolkit taking MeeGo to that next level.

Bottom line you have to roll up your sleeves with this device, and if that doesn't add to your enjoyment of mobile computing devices, the N900 isn't for you.

Well, bugs are still being fixed by Nokia, and the community fixes are coming in at a steady pace. You can also have meego if that floats your boat, thanks to these awesome people.

It all depends on what you need it for. I still get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I click ctrl-shift-x after having this phone for 8 months.
I would buy a second one in a heartbeat if I had the money.
For a linux enthusiast like me, best device ever.

What sort of bugs are we talking about here?
Also if nokia want to abandon us again maybe they should let the community make and release the official updates to the tablets.
