Hi,

Is there some piece of software out there to find free frequencies for the FM transmitter of the N900? It's so cumbersome to do it manually ;-)

Free frequencies? What for?
If you're using it to xmit sound, just find anything on your radio with a lot of static.

In places like germany this would be useful. As almost every frequency is being used. This problem is exacerbated if you live on the dutch, belgian, german border area.

The app should be pretty straight forward to make, but will require some love to get it do things like priority scanning for the best channel and all.

Hi, I've got a pretty good experience with 87,5 MHz. Most radio stations don't go lower than 88 MHz.

I guess the OP means that the N900 should listen on the frequency first to make sure that nothing else is transmitting on it.

So I'm pretty sure it is possible. Will have later a look on it to see if I can make some nice binary for this :P
But I'm pretty much unexperienced with maemo development :-/

To make this really useful we would also need to re-tune the radio automatically using RDS.

Nice idea, maybe it could be done by writing a simple shell script program , but that requires a way to control transmitter/reciever from command line, is there any comand or something to do that?

A program to scan for frequencies with the lowest signal level would be very useful when travelling.

In the meantime, this website has a search for vacant freqencies for locations, & includes a useful graph with the search:
