Bug 11128: Opening the source for Sharing services framework

I have heard from different people who have tried to implement extensions for this important aspect of the Maemo system for a while and recently albanc has gone to extreme lengths to actually implement a new button on the sharing dialog.

This kind of hacking that he did (as amazing as it is) should be totally unnecessary if the code was open.
People have at different times requested alterations and minor tweaks to this but have not had the skills.
Have a read of albans blog about how he did it in monorail

you would be surprised at how much hard work adding one simple button would be!

Yet again, this shows open source will always find a way to do things, but I would like to make it as easy as possible for others.
pretty cool .. open up open up open !!! I can imagine "share via twitter" etc etc ....

not want to let it rot in the open where the possibility surely exists that someone someday may have their eyes on it and may want to improve upon it -- vs -- let it rot in the closed repository somewhere where its _guaranteed_ that no one will ever touch it again? I wud say let it live free.

There are many potential interactions and options with the sharing dialog which we could examine if it was opened and accessible.

The biggest thing that I facepalm every time I ponder this is that we cannot share the sharing dialog code.

indeed

on a related topic, MohammadAG has started hacking with hildon-desktop and looking at making some tweaks and adjustments to try stuff out

And i want to add "Search" feature in conversations

edited : plus make the scrolling a lot smoother somehow (maybe through multithreading, one thread fetches the results while the other keeps the ui scrolling) ... the scrolling of conversations really lags as it brings the older messages in view and resizes the scrollbar.

Has a single thing been opened via it's placement in the licensing change requests queue? If so, what?

Note that there is a public API for the Sharing Framework: http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/...haring_Plug-in

Sounds good, but don't forget to first add multi-threading to the JavaScript engine.

"Share in Twitter" can appear in the "Share via service" dialog.
