Every now and then i feel a slight heat blast from my N900's back side, most of the times it's so subtle that i would have dismissed it as sensory illusion if i could't repeat the sensation by placing my fingers there and stop it by moving away, other times it's clearly hot (not to the point of being painfull it's just clear it is much hotter than the surrounding air), often it seems to happen when it's doing somthing heav-ish , also when charging (or even just plugged in with green status LED) it gets hot all over, i can even feel the keys hot. I'm worried about when the weather heats up over here.....

Is it normal for it to be emitting heat like this? Should i be concerned?

ps: these last few days the temperature has been around between 10°C and 20°C according to the weather widget

Switching off WiFi power-save mode, or doing heavy computational work (emulators) is known to warm the device up. The internal temperature sensor may show SoC temperature in the 36-40oC range.

I think it's quite normal.

My n900 usually gets quite warm when charging.

If the n900 does anything intensive it will get quite warm - the past few days I have been playing with some of the emulators and my n900 does get very warm.

Relax, your n900 is fine.

BTW:
You will also find that when you visit a website with Flash content your n900 will also get warm too (that's because the minimum spec for Flash is this).

Will this become a problem when the average daily temperature is in the 30°C-40°C range?

mine gets to 45-50C. then i stop whatever i'm doing and give it a couple of minutes to cool down. The temperature here is 30-35C during the day, sometime goes up to 40C. but i don't think it's a major problem cz the cpu and other components can handle high temp. Opening the keyboard and removing the back cover helps a lot to control the temp, but anything such as long phone calls, WiFi, tethering, games will cause the temp to rise especially if you OC'd the device.

I've overclocked my N900 to 1100 MHz. When I'm browsing the Internet over 3G my highest recorded temp is 54C. Then I stop and wait till it cools down again. Air temp is 23C.
Browsing the Internet over WiFi keeps my N900 much cooler.

1 hour online tethered via JoikuSpot while charging... Yes, I'll have my eggs sunny side up please.

all phones heats up but to the point of blowing is i don't know. i guess prototypes were abused like there's no tomorrow to know if it'll be dangerous eventually or not. so i guess just don't try to push your phone very hard if it heats up too much...

anything that is complicated programs like flash / joiku or connected to 2g/3g seems to create heat more...

my htc kaiser heats up too when i abuse it using slingbox. so n900 isn't an isolated case...
