A picture-to-picture guide for the other way (sharing your internet on your desktop/laptop to N900 via USB) would be helpful too

EDIT: Would you mind putting this in Maemo Wiki too?

Well i tried creating an ad-hoc connection sharing my internet connection one time to make my pc a wifi hot spot. the n900 connects but does not show any web pages, so i will have to look into that later.
doing it by usb is more complicated since usb networking is not easy to access on n900, and i haven't tried sharing a connection over usb on a pc before.

i'll think about posting it on the wiki. i need to make an account since i've never posted there before. but i prefer people visit my site haha

Here are a few methods including Ad hoc which works for me. You could try to translate it with google or just folllow the pictures:

Thanks, will just do a crash course in Polish now. Awesome response.

Care to make your own English tutorial since you have already worked through it?

I share using Wifi connection thru my PC.

Here how to do:
1. Share Your ICS thru LAN
1.1 Open the “Ethernet” LAN properties and allow ICS
2. Open the Wifi Properties and do as below:
2.1 Under Association: (You can change the encryption key to something else)
2.1.1 Network_Name: MyHomeNetwork
2.1.2 Network Authentication: Open
2.1.3 Data Encryption: WEP
2.1.4 Network Key: a1b1c1d1e1
2.1.5 Confirm Network Key: a1b1c1d1e1
2.1.6 Key Index (advanced): 1
2.1.7 The key is provided for me automatically: Unchecked
2.1.8 This is a computer to computer (adhoc) network; wireless access points are not used: CHECKED

3. Then try to connect from your N900 to setup the SSID manually to use MyHomeNetwork + WEP Key
4. Try to connect to MyHomeNetwork
5. Go back to your XP, and try to make a connection to MyHomeNetwork
6. You should see the MyHomeNetwork will be "connected"
7. You should be able to surf the web using n900 now using the XP Internet connection.

Well no picture , but thats the guideline that I used to setup when I am in hotel.

I personally find tethering via hotspot or bluetooth not very exciting as it gets dead slow at times.
I prefer connecting my fone via usb as a PC suite mode and then via PC suite press the "Internet " icon . It connects you to the internet.. Well that's my opinion / pref..

@tirtawn i am on windows 7 and all the networking settings are different and simplified. so following your steps won't exactly work, but still i think i understand what you did.
you shared the lan internet connection with your wireless connection then made an ad-hoc with the wireless connection right? then just connected to the ad-hoc from n900?
