When at for instance Starbucks and having both my laptop and N810 connected to the attwi (starbucks) router I am not able to use WinSCP to access my N810 (which works great at my home router).

I'm curious, why is this and what exactly is preventing it?

Some access points are configured with wireless client separation. It also protects your laptop from all the malware infested ones on the same WLAN so it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Not at all - thanks for the clarification, I must admit I had no idea that routers allowed for a client separation setting.
