I finally took the plunge and picked up a 770 while they can still be had on the cheap. It should be here in the next few days (although I hope tomorrow). I'm wondering what y'all recommend I do, first. What installations, upgrades, etc? I'm not so much asking about specific apps (I have a sense of what I want to add on that front) so much as I'm asking about advice from people who have experience with these things—what should I do once I get it out of the box?

I should note, also, that I'm on a Mac (both Intellintosh and PPC varieties).

I should also note that I'm mostly interested in the thing as a Web/Email/Chat gadget. I have an iPod for video. I have an iPaq for PDA stuff.

Thanks in advance. I'm assuming that if I like this (this is all a bit of an experiment for me in re-evaluating my portable computing needs) I'll pick up either the new n900 or bite the bullet and replace my powerbook with a UMPC.

Make sure the OS is at least OS2006...gee, I forget how to check. Anybody remember?

Then install Gizmo if you want to make cheap phone calls. Like Skype, but Skype doesn't work on a 770.

At some point get a 1GB or greater MMC card for more capacity and if you want to move the OS to the MMC for greater speed. But you don't have to do that right away. If you do get a memory card turn on virtual memory (Tools->Control Panel->Memory)

I just did. Seems slow and a bit buggy (on OS2007HE) but I am nearly out of space and that may be part of it. How do you get it to display with larger fonts?

Depends on your goals.

I picked up my 770 just a couple weeks ago. I wanted to 0) replace my aging and failing Palm, 1) set it up for developement, 2) learning something about wifi, 3) explore what else it can do.

Some things my Palm does (did):
backup to desktop
games
calendar with alarms, time
notes (plain text), addresses, to-do
book reader
Star charts (and related astronomy)
Development in BASIC, C (sort of), Scheme
calculator
music performance related apps

Things the N770 does:
backup to desktop
games
calendar (with alarms? maybe not), time
notes (plain text, html), addresses, to-do
book reader, PDF reader
star charts - but it's really lame
Development in perl, shell, C, python, scheme, (ruby - but how to install?) Need xterm to start. There are two xterms, and one is much better than the other. I currently have the poor one installed. Feh. So far, i've run a benchmark i wrote in Perl, and "hello, world" apps in shell and python.
calculator
audio and video player
web browsing
email (haven't tried it, other than gmail via web browser)
chat (haven't tried it)
vnc (haven't tried it)
navigation, or at least maps (haven't tried it)
voip - phone over IP (haven't tried it)
picture drawing
sound recording
encrypted notes
host a web server (haven't installed yet)
databases - mysql, sqllite, etc. (Haven't tried them yet).

I have a 2 GB flash on order. Without it, it doesn't play much audio. I haven an iPod, however. I've not yet streamed any audio or video. It doesn't appear that i'll have much opportunity to stream. I mostly use it off line. We'll see.
