Hmm, I've had a reasonable look into this now and I have to say there's a fair bit to it.

There could certainly be some quick wins: The primary player controls, volume, stop, play, pause, skip, prev, mute, shuffle, loop etc are easy commands to send.
But getting the information back is less straightforward.

Certainly isn't a natural fit for how vlc-remote is structured. Vlc uses simple GET requests with data coming back as XML. Squeezebox's web interface appears to be all JSON based and a bit quirky in it's use of that as well.

Also because it can control more than one device it requires some additional setup. Although I have to say it's simple media streaming is tempting.

How hard have you bugged the members of the Garage project? There is mention on their forums of someone getting a build running on the N900 pre 1.2.

cheers for looking into it mate, i havent been able to contact anyone yet who has compiled it for maemo 5, there are a couple, but they seem to be the same fellas posting on all forums. and dont seem active even though they were posting only a few months ago.
the squeezeplay itself would be the ultimate remote its unfortunate they dropped it.
i could live with the primary controls only they are the only essentials, showing current playlist and album art would be great, browsing media and switching between players would be killer.
just a shame its so different from the way the vlc app sends and recieves

If I get a couple of hours free at the weekend I'll see what I can get going quickly. I imagine it will be player controls at a minimum, but some track info and album art should be okay as long as I don't stumble at the device selection stage.

Attached is a zip containing an executable to test against SqueezeBox, unzip it to somehwere executable on your n900. It's not packaged at all so you'll need to start it by name & path from the terminal.

PM me when you get a chance to try it out, sure something will have gone wrong early on but I'm curious as to whether this will work (obv. I don't have an environment to really test this out).

It should prompt you to select the player you want to control once you've entered your server details.

Happy Software Freedom day.

awsome stuff mate thanks,
made executable and it starts fine,
connects to server fine,
select player works, but shows mac address instead of names, and it only remembers selection if you pick the player then tap outside the box.
once connected to the player it pulls the art and music name, play and fastforward/rewind, pause and stop seem to work, volume buttons and mute dont,
and after pressing them the other buttons do not work (most of the time)
changing anything on the squeezebox itself stops the remote from working alltogether.
all in all though fantastic start though dude
im at your disposal for testing. is there a log i can give you or anything?

Cool, that's actually a huge success then!

Is it Mac addresses or IPs? It's actually the ID the server has for the player, I can extract names and other values but showing that extra info would have taken too long to set up. Wanted to make sure you could actually get a working connection.

Incidentally, do you have more than one player connected and can you correctly select them individually?

Good news.

Do you know if changing the volume through the web interface itself works? The calls I make look appropriate.

Does it start working if you reselect the player from the menu? I suspect that either the web interface becomes unresponsive for a while or the player tramples over our communications.

No logs as I can't think what would actually tell me more right now.
