It's not all whining and "Nokia put sand in my shorts and probably will forever until they abandon me again."

I saw some useful stuff the other day about a program that allows the N900 to boot various OS without having to reflash everytime you change your OS. This sort of thing, very technical and very useful, is what makes this community worth being around. We have members who contribute, who think, who tinker and who share.

I teach high school in the USA. Some of my fellow teachers are somewhat negative about the inner city students we teach. But I say to them the same thing I'll say here -"How can you see some of these people and not have hope?" What we post is a matter of our focus. What we read is a reflection of interests.

We need to be less interested in the less positive people.

I admit I read this thread because of the catchy title but in my pre "first cup of coffee" state I thought TMO was T-Mobile abbreviated. I have an active ax to grind with them at the moment so wanted to see who else was having issues.

Why the f*ck do you care what other people think? Strap on a pair!

I'm not gonna reply in the thread, I think it should just die.
I read that as "I think i should just die" and I shrugged.

If you don't like it, don't read it. If you don't like certain people, feel free to add them to your ignore list. There, that wasn't hard, was it? Someone as intelligent as you could've come up with this yourself. Which brings me back to my first sentence.

only problem is that these threads bury a lot of really useful threads in active topics etc....

i think site is great. i think the forujm serves the purpose that was created for and im even more happy to see such mix feelings... isnt this what a community is allbout?
i dont think that we all have to be intelligent to be togather and i see no use what so ever for casting stones at anothr member.

for example this thread is just a bad or even worse than other threads on this site but dont be too quick to
to trash what your perception on a bad thread is.

as for name calling and wishing death on others. whats that all about.. i love this site it contains great content and if members want to be diverse at times then so be the case we are humans and not perfect

Yes, I know, I reported this problem long ago mostly due to a certain person called christexport (or something like that). My suggestion was that one should be able to ignore topics and remove them from the 'active topics' list. This is similar to how big blogs such as Slashdot deal with their huge daily bulk of information: let the user customize the input they by default perceive (when logged in).

IMO partly, yes.

There is tons of useful information on the forums. Tons of interesting threads. And there have been huge discussions and flamewars, too. Perhaps even more in the past.

as for name calling
That is common in discussions. How to handle with them depends on community, and each individual can vote with their behavior and decisions.

However some people have such big ego they need to grow some skin. E.g. learn to ignore an ad hominem, ignore threads you don't care about, and read inbetween the lines.

and wishing death on others.
Lol? I don't see that anywhere.

I didn't find his post particularly constructive since it contains swearing and not a solution. He doesn't do much different from other people: venting their frustration or opinion. And he does it with swearing while at the same time asking for the community to change their behavior.

There are various ways to achieve his goal.
1) More strict moderation
2) More customized experience
3) Community self-regulates better

Since ITT merge more effort was put in both #1 and #2 (Thanks system, Active Topics, Brainstorm, more active moderators, etc etc). I suppose #3 doesn't work according to him. I'd partly agree, but how to solve?

Do we have to choose?

It's interesting that suddenly Engadget is symbolic of All That's Right With the World -- if it was a bit more negative I think you'd be saying Engadget was part of All That's Wrong With the World.

Considering this is a Maemo site, maybe if Nokia had provided a user/customer experience with less to complain about...?
