This is of course an uncertain time for Maemo so I understand why many would be reluctant to bother. However, there's still some life in Maemo and a great need for improved migration process to MeeGo, therefore a need for at least one more council (and hopefully more).

There are numerous people deserving nominations IMO. In addition to my colleagues on the current council, the following immediately come to mind listed in no particular order:

epage
fatalsaint
sjgadsby
yerga
pycage
anidel
zerojay
revdkathy
flandry
timoph
SD69

There are also some from previous councils I would like to see run:

* timsamoff
vdvsx
qole
gcobb

I will not stand for more than 2 terms in a row, but I hope others on the current council will run again. My apologies to those I have omitted; no slight intended. I will make some formal nominations from the lists above later.

* timsamoff nominated himself after I posted this
if these nominees become candidates, honestly, im gonna have a hard time for my first vote for the council elections.

i just received an email from Maemo Council that I am eligible to vote. such a great pleasure.

Would it be possible to include TMO user names for all the Council candidates on the wiki page where they give their position statements?

Q: What role do you see our community playing regarding the development and perhaps maintenance of QT applications and development tools?

Q: Should we actively promote and advocate maemo.org as a "home base" for some of these QT developers in order to broaden our base?

Although these QT apps may be eventually targeted for Symbian, MeeGo, or other OS's, it is my understanding that they first will be able to run on our N900's and concievably other Maemo devices.

I realize I could be way off base here (and it wouldn't be the first time ) however; does anyone else see this as an opportunity for our community to remain viable in the short term and a possibility for the culture and methods that have developed here to evolve in the long term?

I guess you're asking in what way you see folks around here getting involved in the development of parts of the platform, like Qt and the SDK (Qt Creator, etc) - personally, I feel we should try to be a part of that, as its our platform that this stuff affects.

Obviously, though, everyone wants to do their own things, so it's not going to be wholesale engagement by any means.

Isn't that already happening naturally, and organically, to some extent? I know that personally at least I've seen a large (and constantly growing) number of Qt applications (& developers) floating around and playing with N900s.

To directly answer your question, though, I don't think that maemo.org should try to be yet another developer documentation/homebase (though especially thanks to Qt on Maemo5, we already have a bit of this..), there's already too many of these around (in various stages of germination): MeeGo has plans for one, Qt has one (developer.qt.nokia.com), and there's also Forum Nokia and other Qt-centric places like QtCenter.

I believe the investment on keeping Qt up to date on the n900 to be the best way to keep our "devices" alive. We need to make sure that whenever Nokia decides to work on Qt4.8 that the n900 will get that too. More important even is to keep the qt mobility "backends" for the n900 alive and kicking.

Just one example of something that the developers in the community could work on: enhancing the qt mobility contacts backend to support "contacts grouping", "custom fields", "field labels" and some other features that Qt Mobility can support but the backend for the n900 can't. We are bound to see "contact front ends" written in Qt (for meego or not), enhancing our backend would allow us to greatly enhance the "phone side" of the n900 by back porting them.

First, second or last... probably not as important as continuing to be "an easy/viable target" for qt application developers. I am sure that if we had qt4.6 on diablo we would have seen many more applications ported to it. And with meego we will have even more qt applications floating around. The autobuilder will also be critical.

If you are, I am right there with you. If we don't believe that there can be a future for maemo after 6 months I can't see much of the point.

Thank you for your response...

If I may be so bold to ask some other questions of the candidates then:

Q: Do you see any future value in the culture and methods developed here at maemo.org in the past?

Q: Do you see your role in the next Community council as a custodian of an orderly depreciation of maemo.org and it's culture until they/it is no longer useful in its present state,

or;

do you believe other uses for maemo.org and its community can be developed that would eventually serve a larger and more diverse population of engaged users?

If the answer to the first part of that^ last compound question is "Yes":

Q: Should a road-map of this depreciation be developed by the next council to present scheduled expectancies and key events to our members?

***

In the corporate world the second part of that question is often accomplished by rebranding.

In other cases brand opportunities are often realized and then optimized through innovative engagement programs that in this case could involve feedback from current community members and invite input from potential new members or audience.

For instance:

My first experience with a device manufactured by FMC, originally the Food Machine Corporation was the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and it had nothing to do with food.

100's of millions of people world wide use 3M products daily, yet have never set foot in a mine.

Good luck and best regards...
