I would suggest you read through this entire post as it has most of the answers. Take a closer look at this post:

as it will help you decode your code after you run the echo root command on your N900. You need to download John the ripper (google). Hope this helps!

Thank you very much to those involved, I didn't know what my code was (it may very well have been the default).

I ran the command line as root, interestingly it looks like the code it returned was actually unencrypted (displayed something like "root:12345"), I'm still lagging behind on updates so I am at PR1.1 (or possibly 1.1.1 if that makes any difference.

I have another problem, when I start x-terminal, I see the following error :

How do I remove this?
