Uh, the removal of Opera from the new OS, does that mean simply no new versions will be available, or that the current one won't work no matter what? In some cases for sites I need to use the Opera version of the browser, and it would be a bummer if it didn't work at all. I'd be fine with no new development of it, but I would really like the current version to run.

Back OT: It seems to me the N800 is still the work horse and the N810 really is a "con$umer device". I notice the mapping software is "upgradeable". This is a departure of sorts in that it comes pre-loaded with some finished (read commercial) software.

Nokia has redeemed themselves by providing a little something, something, for everyone.
The unfinished N800 continues to evolve and for on-board storage it is still king.

Meanwhile the mass appeal and target market of the N810 should provide many more software options that N800 users can enjoy, hack. and provide input in the development of.

My intention has always been for the N800 to be my "carputer" if iDEN BT connectivity comes as promised, I can provide my car with an IP for just the cost of a BT iDEN cell phone in the glove box.... with no online charges. (Slow as hell @ 2.6 Kbps but hey, my desktop can talk to it all night at that price. )

A slide out keyboard is not necessary for this set up so for me the N800 still rules.

YoDude: My interest was never really in the included mapping software... I know people with boats and they've shelled out hundreds for topographical map sets, waterway map sets, etc... my question is, will MaemoMapper work with this...

Just saw the price on engadget, 479, ouch. That is expensive. I think it's time for me to consider other alternative. I certainly don't like the placement of the dpad, but with the slide out keyboard, maybe it's not too bad. Don't like the camera placement either, I prefer the popout ones because you can turn it 180degree. This is not good for taking pictures. Resolution should be higher. But as far as looks goes, it's nice.

I surprised no one has mentioned where the built-in microphone is now. See that microphone shaped divot between the home button and escape button? If that's the new location for it, then that means you might be able to hold this thing to your face to make voice-only calls (using the right speaker as the phone speaker). Maybe. Just a thought.

I'm actually disappointed by the built in 2GB memory. Why? Because my N800 already has that. And, with SDHC support, my N800 can do _BETTER_ than that with a 16GB card in my internal slot. That's right: the N810 doesn't give you better internal flash memory, it forces you to only have 2GB of internal flash memory (no more, no less). I think that's a bit of a let down.


Overall, the N810 seems to me to be a mixed bag. In order to do web surfing accurately, I have to slide out the keyboard (I heavily use the dpad for navigating in web pages). The stand is N800 style (a downside IMO, would have preferred a tilt screen). Still a barrel charger. No photo camera, just a chat camera. No possibility of 16GB in the internal card slot (only for the external card slot). No Bluetooth PAN support.

But, more memory, faster cpu, uniform thin formfactor (one of hte engaget galleries compares it to an iPhone, and it's basically close to the same thickness, just a little big bigger in length, I think), hardware keyboard with backlighting, looks like the GUI is improving, and the camera is no longer out on a little fragile (and, IMO, dorky) looking nub.

I'm pretty sure I'll be waiting for the WiMAX version, though.
