Am using my N900 on Vodafone UK with the most recent firmware update. Since late yesterday, I can't open my Contacts without it closing immediately after.
  1. I open Contacts (either from menu or desktop shortcut).
  2. It opens briefly but shows no contacts; the header is 'Contacts' with the refresh spiral going around.
  3. Sometimes it will close completely then open again....but not always, then....
  4. The header then changes to 'Recent Contacts' still with the re-fresh spiral. Briefly the expected display of ByRecent contacts will show, but....
  5. It then closes and shows "Internal Error. Application 'Contacts' closed." This error will then show every 5-10 seconds over any application I'm using for ever. Even if I reboot, I get this. And even if I reboot and don't try to open contacts, I get this.
This means I can't add, delete or modify any contacts.

One thing to note is that yesterday I changed the Contacts display mode from my usual 'Availability' to 'Recent,' but it displayed fine, let me scroll through them, and even close and open Contacts again a little later.

I did get an update for OMweather last night, but would this have caused it? I don't recall getting this error before doing the update. Maybe just clutching at straws.

I've tried re-loading a Contacts back-up and this didn't have any affect.

I'm looking for an answer other than 'reformat your phone.'

Any helpers?

I don't know what could be the reason for this,
but you can change the display mode back.
In xterm enter this command. It changes the gconf
setting value for the display mode:
gconftool -s /apps/osso-addressbook/contacts-mode 0 -t int

Hi Nicolai,

You wouldn't believe how much those 5-second error messages knackered the battery. 1 hour and it was dead.

But your Xterm entry worked fine. Had to reboot a few times to get Contacts to open as quickly as they used to. And now it's all back to normal.

Thank you very much for your reply!

I've noticed such behavior after installing extended contacts search plugin and going to check the plugin's about section. Similar errors were popping up even when I didn't try to open the contacts app itself. I think I was using recent contacts tab as well.
The issue was gone after I removed the plugin, didn't have courage to install it again. Still, it's a fantastic plugin, so will give it another try after PR1.3 upgrade.
Might be useful to someone who visits this thread in future.

Third one: ctrl types in A in Russian layout on the desktop.

Happened to me, what I did was just write the contact name (in the desktop, without opening the contacts app). This let me open the contacts a again. Also, most likely if you reboot, the phone will be normal again.

I've got 2 installed at the moment, "Scout" app and "Extend Contact search feature" - is it the latter I should install?
