Depends on how you see it. As a (primary) phone, it's relatively slow and has some really unexpected quirks. I come from S60 (non-touch) and have never started to use the N900 as my main phone. The old Symbian device from 2007 performs a lot better, can do all the "phone-stuff" the N900 will never be able to do and has a much better battery life.

Still I have the N900 with me most of the time (2nd SIM card, same number), and as a computer, it's powerful, fast, flexible, open and still keeps amazing me after almost 1 year. It's faster than 2 of the PCs I regularly work with, it has better battery life and connectivity than my laptop and it integrates perfectly with the rest of my network. (I run GNU/Linux exclusively.)

So as many others said before: Do you want a stable, fast phone full of features? You'll find a better one. Do you want a damn sexy and fascinating, fast, always connected hybrid computer/phone-gadget? There's nothing that could beat the N900.

Oh, btw: Why not buy the N8 now, wait how it evolves (there'll be a new firmware for it, too, don't forget).... and then sell it and get the N9 we're all waiting for?

1st time i buy N900. i really pissed off *before i find this Awesome community maemo.org*.. now i'm really glad i have one

- N900 can't install .jar with normal.. (so make sure what app in .jar format really u need) if no.. thats +1 point for N900
- are u often with video call or not..
coz N900 really *no or not yet* hope in fornt camera.. 5800 do more better... but the prime camera in N900 with 5Mb pixel far better in capture a pict even at low light.... 5800 a bit *poor in quality* when capture @ nite or low light...
- and now.. we talking with app..
5800 have good .sis & .jar app with Touch Screen support / some without.. replace by Virtual Cursor.
@N900 enable reposit, extra reposit & extra test.. than start read this Threads in maemo.org .. u will have a lot off fun in your adventure
which N900 can install dual OS or more.. i can't said amount of apps around N900 .. the best part is alot of this app based on Open Source.. we can used.. learn, edit or even make one of this app for own N900 taste
before use N900.. i really blind in Linux.. but thanks to all @ this community & a bit from another place now i can use & learn Linux based OS with my beloved N900 Gadget..
so the conclusion *for me*= N900 far better & really Fun with Adventure of Wow.. nice.. awesome.. but sometimes make u headache.. d*mn error at everywhere or something else.. but this all is parts of fun & learning

see nitroid.com for info on that. Some things are not fully functional (camera, gps, phone audio), so not really a realistic alternative yet. However, lots of fun to play with. You can download flash 10.1, all kinds of apps and games.

Reason: Some know how to use it, some don't.

I didn't come from a previous Nokia device but I've found the N900 to exceed my expectations after all the negative comments on these forums. I made sure it had the capability for my needs, then went with the wants...both my wife and I have had this as my main phone for almost a year now.

Here's what I use it for: Phone first, Ipod replacement second, Web browser third, then photo/video with our 3 month old. I just checked to see how many songs I have loaded up on this sucker after reading the previous comment about sluggishness...figured I must have less than I thought b/c I've had no sluggish issues since PR 1.2....I've got 7500 songs on it and use it about an hour a day on average solely for music...maybe it's b/c I have the collection split, half on the microsd, half on the phone that keeps things speedy.

I'm on this forum b/c I like fiddling with stuff so I've overclocked mine and have done a few other things here and there.

My wife has done none of the modding, uses hers as phone/text mainly with occasional browsing/camera/music streaming and still loves it to this day compared to her friend's iphones in both speed and function.

So, I don't know what to tell you, seems like there's a wide variety of user experience from absolutely awesome to I should go get a land line. My guess is that it's a combination of user expectations and differences in how each processor performs.

o whoa, i have experience the same. when i first got the n900, i asked myself why did i get this pos phone that does everything all my old s60 phones (e65, n95, e71, n85) with a crappy battery life to boot. than i found this community, and downloaded a bunch of apps and messed up my phones many times and through the constant fixing the phone, i have learned to love it alot and enjoy this phone alot more and its possibly the best phone i have ever had or will have. When my friend do their android vs iphone comparo, i just seat there and watch, as i know the n900 is way more than a smart phone, its a computer, so no point of pwning them both with this device as it is not even a fair comparo

My previous phone was a 5800, and I now own an N900 for over 6 months. I mainly use my N900 for listening to music, making calls, sending text and browsing the internet.
As you can see, I am hardly using my N900 to its full potential. However I can say that I find the N900 much better suited to this use than the 5800 I owned before. Sending texts is a far better experience with the hardware keyboard and the great coversations app. Browsing the web is awesome, getting the full desktop experience. I hated the stock browser on the 5800 and Opera Mini used to crash all the time as well. For listening to music, the 5800 was very decent except when I wanted to browse the web at the same time: the device would become slow as hell. The N900 may slow down a fraction, but remains perfectly usable. Honoustly, I don't regret getting rid of my 5800 at all. I did sell it beore the latest firmware releases though, so things may have improved a bit since.
Even for my simple use the N900 is clearly the better device, and I seriously doubt I will ever use a (Nokia) Symbian device again now that I have seen the light.

PS I have written this post on my N900, something I would never have done on my old 5800.

I had a 5800 before the n900 too, and quite frankly...its not fair to compare. the N900 is a high quality device that can do pretty much everything the 5800 does...just better.
you do need to get used to some linuxy stuff about repositories and a few commands but once you get used to it, its not at all difficult.
right now i'm *****ing with a bit of an annoying problem where the phone app doesen't stay in portrait mode, which i think is pretty annoying. but generally i'd say i very much enjoy the device, the browser is great, pidgin is a wonderful IM client that i use alot, the keyboard is very good. and its just...good quality.
some people have issues with the lacking nokia mms support, i never used mms before so it wasnt an issue for me. just to get the annoying iphone mms'er at my office off my back, i setup fmms today...and now i can mms.
its not a fantastic solution for mms, but it does the job...you can send and receive mms.
I'd give it a 8/10, and i dont expect to be getting a different phone for at least another year. so it will have lasted 2-3 years before i sell it.
