You mean a 'smarter' operating system would dumb it down for people who are unwilling to use logic and reason when performing tasks that may very well be detrimental to the functionality of their handset?

I've no idea what Ovi Suite or PC Suite may or may not do. I've never installed, or even seen, either one. I can speak only to the Backup application on Maemo devices themselves.

I still think the Backup application on Maemo fails in terms of restoring applications. Mainly the applications that require you to acknowledge a prompt or type in a password (openSSH). It really should just install all the applications and then show you whatever prompts. Especially since I usually let it restore apps when I sleep overnight only to find that it stopped due to a prompt.

I'm pretty sure I understand what's going on here. Bad connection + software that your phone/it doesn't like + software that the computer can't handle. Sounds like it's time to get off the dialup and AMD K6 and move to faster more expensive things. Even though that's the antithesis to the N900, it's probably equally justifiable to your frustration. I should know. When your bandwidth is so saturated that it becomes slightly faster than a single ISDN line, you don't usually have the bandwidth to be reading all the important stuff either.

THAT is the real frustration and that's the problem. There is no meaningful pause here, you're simply killing yourself with each delayed gesture. Not cool. :/

I also found some really frustrating problems with the Ovi suite.. like backing up my device took over half an hour, just to tell me there wasnt enough diskspace left on my computer.. . (just over 50 Gib of free space) Anyway, does anyone know the real new features we got by installing PR 1.3? Havent found any so far...

In order for Backup to store application DEBs in backup files, those DEBs would have to be cached on your device at all times, ready and waiting for when you run a backup. So, that's precious space lost there, plus more space lost when the DEBs are copied into the backup file.

Then, when you restored a backup containing application DEBs, the system would need to recalculate all dependencies in case you had done something like backing up on PR1.2 and restoring on PR1.3. And if you had, underlying system packages would have changed, so you'd wind up having to download updated applications from the PR1.3 repo to meet dependencies anyway.

Take, for example, Tweak Flash Version. There's a PR1.2 version, and there is soon to be a PR1.3 version. Using the wrong version on a given firmware revision level can lead to a broken Flash plug-in, so the Tweak Flash Version DEBs explicitly specify a given PR version in their dependencies. So, if Backup saved DEBs, when it came to restoring Tweak Flash Version, Backup would have to refuse to restore the PR1.2 version and force you to download the updated version for PR1.3.

Not really I think he actually means that given the flaky and poorly constructed OS, with it's myriad of holes and required technical know how. And given the appalling support from Nokia that anything that makes the process of updating easier (OVI suite is dodgy, reflashing is techy and the normal download rate is fraught with connection issues.) or less likely to brick your phone is a much needed and much appreciated bonus.

Commenting on the OP - I updated via the wifi method and just running app manager, it offered me a back up and ran fine, though I have seen nothing to tell me things have improved, the bug fixes are well hidden assuming they work, most for me fix things I never used anyway and my grievances and lack of functionality remain. I can sympathise as you really don't get much for the loss and annoyance you have been through.

IT DID, if op paid attentions. It mentioned and warmed, the only thing sort of not doing is refused to upgrade without a backup. Then there would be crying that the upgrade is NOT user friendly. It is NOT easy to be Nokia nowadays, you do, you doom, you dont, you doom.
