The ones that don't have it installed can install it (just like they can install Whatsapp). My N900 has a nice list in conversations of all my contacts that are online.
I still don't get it. Why pay for and use a closed application when there's a very good and open alternative availible? Don't let this vendor lock you (and your friends) in!

Sure it does. It's called instant messaging isn't it?
Google talk comes default with all android phones and with newer blackberries. So the market is huuuge.
And the fun part is that it supports video and voice calling too.

WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messaging app which allows you to exchange messages with your friends and contacts without having to pay for SMS.
Minimum requirements:
* Unlimited internet data plan!
With whatsapp, you do not need to be connected to 3G data connection all the time. It basically sends an sms to your mobile number when new message is received.
Then you connect to the whatsapp sever via 3G data to retrieve the mesage.

I think what we need is more like confirming the delivery of a message.
I use google talk and many times when the connection cuts for a couple of seconds and I'm supposed to receive a message I don't receive it or send a message it doesn't send it.
