I wonder how you guys always achieve these great problems....

I just received a Skype call, and now my screen has dimmed again, no reboot and no other fiddling necessary.

You're obviously special, Rider

I've no idea either... oh well actually I do, it's called poor QA.

Mine is just a standard reflash, no restore. The problem is 100% reproducible for me, and I don't think I'm alone. I don't have auto-lock enabled either - I should have mentioned that in the bug report.

What else do I have installed... lemme see... xterm, openssh, Pidgin (AIM + IRC) and of course Skype.

Rider... see if you can reproduce the problem under these circumstances.

1. Set your display dim time to 10 seconds (the blank interval is not important)
2. Sign in to Skype
3. Ensure your status is "online" (just the tick - not SkypeMe)
4. From your contacts, call a landline telephone number (ie. not a Skype-to-Skype contact)
5. Before the call is answered but while the distant phone can be heard ringing, hang up
6. Wait for the screen to dim - for me, it does not dim after 5+ minutes of waiting.

Let me know if you can reproduce this behaviour. It's possible that it is specific to non-Skype-to-Skype phone calls.

Just tried that. The screen dimmed after 10 seconds. And has now just turned off.

I'll need to spend some more time working out what it is then - I thought I'd nailed it.

perhaps people who have/don't have this problem can leave a post here telling exactly there system setup

eg. have dim problem, firmware updated; skype, canola, installed, etc...

i dunno... perhaps its even by manufacturer location?

how far can we take this?

I don't know what to tell you. I no longer have this problem with the settings I described above.

I'm unable to reproduce the problem so far. The only thing I didn't try was to change the timing settings (and I haven't yet re-installed acmonitor after the upgrade, in case it matters).

I see this is an old thread, I hope it is ok to post this added observation / comment.

I found this thread by searching the Forums keywords skype+and+dim. I was searching to see if anyone observed this dimming issue. I have had my N800 a week (October 2007), and I saw this "failure to dim" backlight issue after making Skype-out calls. The failure to dim issue does not happen on my device when I make a Skype-to-Skype call, only during a Skype-Out call to a landline or cellular...and the failure to dim remains failed even after the Skype-Out call has concluded.

At first I thought it might be because Skype intended it to be this way so users would always see the "ticker" of how much the current Skype-out call was costing/totalizing in dollars ( I am in the USA ). But the failure to dim after the call is concluded has to be a bug.

To fix, after I conclude a Skype-out call, I close Skype and re-open Skype on the N800. I am going to do a Skype-In call to the N800 and see what that does to the dimmer. If anyone is interested in the result of my test, post here and I'll report my findings. Regards M5

Yeah, I gave up trying to nail it down but it sounds like you may have succeeded, well done! I'll try to reproduce it on my device when I get a moment, but I think it's all a bit of a waste of time as Skype seem to take even less interest in reported bugs than Nokia, which I didn't think was possible.
