In Dreambox VLC Streamer, open Transcoding part:
Output method: http
Encapsulation: asf
Video codec : theo
Video bitrade: 384
Scale: 0.5

Audio Codec: mp4a
Audio Bitrade: 64
Audio Channels: 2

And that's it..you can play this stream with built in Media player.

If you want to make video bookmarks in media player:
1.On computer make TXT file and write:
http://XX.XX.XX.XX:YYYY
2. This is your path to the streaming computer( if you are behind router-hub, you must config it)
3. Change extension of TXT to m3u.
4.Copy this file to n900 and open with File manager.
5.The stream must start if you make proper configuration. In media player press "+" button and write the name ot video bookmarks.

I hope this help..with this configuration, you can watch every video playing in home computer. Change settings in VLC streamer and find what is best for you.

and just to be sure.. your not using the extra decoders support ?

because that does not use the DSP hardware

holy ****! it worked!!

we should update a wiki post or something with the descriptions on howto setup VLC for this

but one thing that concern me is the usage of cpu

1312 679 user S < 9936 4.0 39.2 /usr/bin/mafw-dbus-wrapper mafw-gst-renderer

its 39%... is it using DSP then?

Hmmmm, I am not sure about this. I think that if I don't use external decoder it use DSP, but I'm not familiar with Linux and this is my first maemo device, and I love.
For me is enough when I use N900 with this combination of software and video codec, I can fast switch chanel, stream in various bitrade-depend of my internet speed and if I connect to tv, device is switch off display so i can save battery :-)

I also have problem with mpeg-TS, though decoders-support is installed.
Am trying to stream it from MythTV using UPnP, and get "video codec not supported".
Tried copying to play locally, same result. Repackaged into AVI file and it works. mpeg-PS works too. So it seems the problem is the MPEG-TS container from myth, not the codec or mime type.

Has anyone been able to stream DVB recordings from MythTV on the N900 please?

I've got the same problem (with a dreambox 600 PVR):
- with French (Tntsat) programs, it starts streaming, but crashes after a couple of seconds.
- with German programs, it says "Unable to play media. Video codec not supported"

I tried both with and without the decoders-support package installed, same result
