You're welcome.
Just a quick question:
How long do you plan on using this?

And, will this be for you, OR for the entire family to use, OR a gift (and how much you like them?).

Also what is your maximum budget (I will do a quick hunting for you)?

Now what you can do to help me/help you is:
Test out a regular Atom (any N-series) netbook. Just try one from your friend or stroll into a store and give it as much thorough use as you can. (open several folders, play music, open several browsers, play videos etc etc).

Don't worry about the CPU speed (yet).
Can you tolerate the N-series performance?

If you cannot test it, I can tell you it is a different experience from your standard Windows 7 experience.
Eg when you hit a folder, normally it would just open, but on the Atom's it will take a second (or even more depending on the contents) to open.
If you demo this shortly it will be okay, but in day to day use it really takes its toll because you end up with waiting periods.

For some people, this is okay. Not for me which is why I upgraded.

I'm rocking a 1.3GHz Core2Duo (SU7300) which is pretty common now - so if you can find that in your budget grab it!
With the SU7300 folders open swiftly, and applications respond - just like normal (minor times a lag - never a worry).
I'd say the SU3500 is midway performance in between the speed of the N455 and the SU7300. It's is basically the same SU7300 but with only one processor not dual.
So if you cannot bear the lag of the Atom line, but fall short of the SU7300 budget, grab the SU3500 if its in your range.

Here's my find so far:

Acer Aspire 4810T - 349 Euros
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/GRADE...60/version.asp

This model better than a netbook, thanks to 3GB DDR2 RAM and the SU9400 will make things run much more swiftly. It runs on pretty good battery life but this is 14" size so it is more comfortable watching and typing but it is slightly less portable.
What it has over the normal netbook is a webcam, HD screen, HD video playback and Vista Home Premium (you can upgrade to Win7 yourself, buy it or have-friends-that-have-friends)

Acer Aspire 4810TG - 499 Euros
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/GRADE...21/version.asp

This is exactly the same model I have and I've used it for ~14months (when this processor made it into retail) and it was VERY expensive when I picked it up, this price made me die a little. I highly recommend this one, to be honest. This is exactly the same notebook above (the SU9400 is the SU7300 with 0.1GHz extra) but with better performance 4GB RAM (really helps, any more than 4GB is unnecessary). It can now do some basic games (Quake 4 etc) and also do smooth FULL-HD content because of the ATi4330. It also packs a DVD/CD drive, Bluetooth, extra HDD and Win7 Home Premium. This model is the highest BANG for BUCK - long shelf life!

I think you might be able to pick up a N455 + ION + 2GB RAM + 10" LED brand new for (if you're lucky) about 350 euros.
So the choice is yours my friend

edit: I found this review for a similar/same Acer laptop, I just wanted to show you the portability difference (its thinner and ~same weight just slightly wider and clearly a little longer).
http://netbooked.net/netbook-reviews...su3500-review/

edit2: I also found these ones:

Lenovo IdeaPad U450 - 343 Euros
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenov...UK/version.asp
(exactly the same as the 349 euro Acer - but it has 2GB instead of 3GB which will run things noticibly slower however the IdeaPad has a really good quality/build reputation)

if you think 14" is too much there is a 11.6" Acer (i think it is a little large to lug around the 14" but really its not that much larger than the typical 10" netbook). It's called the Aspire 1810T (or the 1410)
http://acer1810treview.blogspot.com/
It's again much better than all netbooks, it can do HD movies, but its not as good as my 14" model. If you can find it for 300 Euros, in that case, I would definitely say it has more BANG for BUCK than the 4810TG.

and also look out for the ASUS UL80V (or ul80vt)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/what...sus-ul80v.html

edit 3: the specs for the Lenovo are not SU7300 (they made a purpose mistake) it is infact SU4100.
The SU4100 was the hi-end culv-processor of last gen. The SU4100 gives you roughly the equivalent (decent) battery life of SU7300 but it gives you worse performance, about the same as the su3500 (slightly laggy at times but still better than N455's).

The best ones in terms of "netbook" seem to be:
1) Asus EEE PC 1015PED-P (N475, 1GB RAM, 6 cell), add 1GB RAM
2) Asus EEE PC 1015PED-M (N455, 1GB RAM, 6 cell), add 1GB RAM
3) Asus 1018P (N475, 2GB RAM, 4 cell)
4) Asus 1018PB (N455, 1GB RAM, 4 cell), add in 1GB ddr3 RAM for responsiveness

the next ones are:
Pretty much all the ones with N450 (most of them). They all have 1GB ddr2 RAM and similar 250/320gb storage. So the differentiator is whichever one is the cheapest or has the largest battery (# of cells) or is ergonomically the best.

I wouldn't recommend any of the dual core ones. They have half the battery life and only give something like 30% extra performance (equal to SU3500), so it really isn't a fair trade.

Since you've informed me you will be keeping it for ~5years, I would say a netbook doesn't cater well to your needs. With Windows 7, better newer programs will come out and in a short period you will regret getting a netbook because it will frustrate you.

Here's an example, Samsung Kies took 6minutes to properly sync to Galaxy S on Eee whereas it takes ~30seconds to do so on my Acer.

My recommendation would be to go with the Acer Aspire 4810TG. At the price I found you, it's a steal (mine cost $1700). I wouldn't be suprised if the other members on this site buy it before you do. Not only do you get something which is bleeding edge (seriously the only contender would be the Core i7 640-UM and ATi5650) but you get it in a decent package. It should last you five years even in this accelarating age.

But if it is out of your budget; get the Acer for 349 euros. You should upgrade to Windows 7 HomePremium (much speedier than Vista) and maybe upgrade to 4GB DDR3 RAM - to squeeze out all the performance juice. But that will set you back 100 euros and you miss out on the 4330 GPU- so you can only barely view HD videos.
But if you do not upgrade it, for 349 euros it is the same price as the ASUS Eee PC 1015PED-P and still much better.

Or better yet, upgrade to any modern linux distro, that will be more flexible and faster than both.

[QUOTE=ch88xy;894263 I would recommend netbook over tablet if you plan to watch videos occasionally (unless you don't mind holding a tablet in your hands for e.g. 90 minutes). Unlike a tablet, a netbook has a build-in keyboard that can be used as stand, and the viewing angle can be easily adjusted.[/QUOTE]

Oh yeah, cause I watch video on my iPad holding it in my hand....sure. and I type on it holding it on my hand or flat on a table. Sure.......

Yep I do it once a while too, when I am too lazy to change the device. Nevertheless, If you are at home and have other laptops available that are equally or more capable, but as a rule choose to watch a 90 minute movie on a iPad held in your hands, I can only use the word "fetish" to describe the behavior (perhaps the physical connection with the device makes the experience more intimate?)
