the g-tablet with custom roms from xda is good, the tegra 2 is fast and the ui very responsive... i got this over the archos as its twice the memory and a dual core processor. the stock viewsonic tap n tap ui is crap but its very easy to flash. i also have full market access after following another xda hack, very good tablet.

I know that feeling. I was out trying the Galaxy, it just doesn't have the wow of the iPad. So I gave up and bought one......

AND LOVE IT...

Ultimately though, it depends on what you are going to be using it for is the main factor between choosing anything based on specs. Cheaper isn't always better!

After the freedom of the N900 I really don't like the limitations of the iPad / Apple (I also have mini & ATV 1st gen). But the iPad serves my basic needs very well. Instant web browser and pocket-sized remote control for XBMC / iTunes etc

Cool, looking forward to your review. I think this device sets the bar for 2011.

Sure thing. I will mainly be comparing it against the iPad, since that's my current tablet.

I guess I've to go hit xda-dev and read up now...

And you're okay with it being WiFi only? I remember you trading in your non-3G iPad for a 3G one.

I still have a huawei mifi(-like) unit that I bought for that wifi iPad, so that thing should pair nicely with the g-tablet. I think this is a worthwhile trade-off (g-tablet's monstrous power and slightly more open capabilities for not having the onboard 3G); I just need to see how the software+content stacks up against iPad's.

Over time, I've also found/accumulated more ways/gadgets to 'overcome' 'not having 3G'... So, we'll see...

You can plug in a USB 3G antennae (costs <$80).
All you need to do is slide in your 3G SIM card, and your good to go*

The biggest drawback is having the damn dongle on whenever you want to access the internet (or having it on 24/7 if you want push email/constant access).

*as long as the usb-stick is supported and the custom ROM you flashed supports 3G connectivity.

Has anyone preordered a Notion Ink Adam. I really want to know how that beast stacks up, is the UI fluid? usb host just works? PixelQi upto snuff?

I picked up a Viewsonic G Tablet last night after reading through so many great reviews on the XDA forum and was eager to flash to one of the many great ROM’s available.

Unfortunately, once I started playing with it, this amazingly spec’d device I was slammed in the face with the fact the screen truly is terrible. At odd angles, it is similar to an ancient laptop. Since one of the reasons I wanted a tablet was to replace the Kindle my wife procured from me, this is a deal killer.

I want a tablet. I want one badly. Not going to try forcing the issue anymore. I will wait for a solid Maemo tablet or for Android to mature.

Wow. That kind of hardware and it's backed by a low quality TN panel? Seriously dumb. IPS is practically required for portable devices just by their possible use cases.
