First all build and packaging scripts need to be created/updated. Then all platform variant specific code needs to be validated so that the build does not include any stuff it shoudn't like appstore buttons. All graphics need to be created in N900 resolution. The GPU on N900 have somewhat inaccurate varying interpolators causing texturing to be inaccurate which causes all kinds of glitches in graphics so they need to be throughly tested on device and create workarounds for places which look bad.

After this the build needs to go through QA where it has to be played completely through to be ensure no regression has happened, which can not be taken for granted. For example 1.4.2 update on Palm got delayed for several weeks beause we managed to trigger a HW bug in OMAP3430 which crashed the whole device, and it took a while from Palm to figure out what was happening and how to avoid it. Since N900 shares the same SoC I was a bit afraid that same could happen here also.

After the build is ready and tested the sales folks take it, prepare all marketing and submission material and work actively to get the game out into the stores.

While we are not talking about enormous amount of work here, it still piles up when you are constanty creating updates for several plaforms with small amount of people. This time we just didn't have enough resources to push seasons out on every platform simultaneously which would have been needed since it's very time sensitive product.
Thanks to you, Miika, for this honest and interesting (personally, I'm always curious about game development, It'd be nice If you had a dedicated blog for this ) post.

Anyway, I want to make something clear: people here are not asking for simultaneous updates, they're just asking for updates, release schedule doesn't matter too much if you are not thinking about releasing the next title/episode after N900 goes completely dead So, in summary: Will we ever get Seasons, and newer updates, anytime soon, soon as in 6 months? (It's not hard guess there will be newer updates, since AG is successful)

Anyways, keep up the great work, can't wait to play Lvl Pack 4 on my N900..
Yeah, I've hated that, but since PR1.3 the game run ALOT smoother, and now with the new angry birds version (1.4.2) it comparable with the iphone version.

And why oh why, is the god damn OVI Store SO slow?! How hard can it really be to do a QA? And when they know it's already been QA'd at a great studio like Rovio I'd think they just roll it out, but No! Anyway, keep up the good work Rovio!

Indeed: Angry Birds level packs should one of the simplest things to QA (compared to full applications):
  • Does it depend on angrybirds>=1.4.2?
  • Are the correct files are in the deb archive?
  • Check there's nothing else that shouldn't be in the deb archive?
  • Do the new levels appear in Angry Birds after installing?
  • Do they all work?
  • Can you get 3 stars on them all?
  • Can you do better than the scores in the TMO google spreadsheet?
Actually, I can see why it takes so long...
