I setup Nokia Messaging with my hotmail account and am having the following issues:
1) Push doesn't seem to work. The main reason I signed up for Nokia messaging was for the PUSH functionality. Is there something else that I need to do?
2) Thinking that there might be some additional settings that I need to modify, I tried logging into Nokia messaging and used my hotmail account to log in (1'st and only account setup on Nokia messaging) and I'm unable to log in.
3) I thought when I setup Nokia messaging on my phone, only new messages were supposed to come in. Instead everything seems to have gotten downloaded to my phone (still on the server as well).

Have I setup things properly? Am I missing something?

just check the settings on the phone, there's nothing useful on the website. from the email app, click your account, then go to edit account.
under synchronization you can make sure its "all day" and only disabled with very low battery.
and unreliable operation and being unable to login to the website is normal...

Nokia Messaging is pretty rubbish. Pushes my emails immediately less than half the time. Was so bad I am now using IMAP and set device to check for new emails every 15 minutes. That 15 minute delay is still even faster than using Nokia Messaging.

I guess I'll just forward all my messages to gMail and use IMAP with e-mail polling.

I tried to setup my Nokia messaging account but I always received an error message "impossible d'établir une connexion à em1x-63.lhr.messaging.nokia.com. Le nom de serveur ou le numéro de port est peut être incorrect" (sorry it's in french).
I have got the name server from Nokia webmail connection.
I use IMPA4 and SSL (IMAP4S) with port 993 for input connection and SSL
port 465 for output connection. My french telecom operator is Orange.
What's wrong ?
