Hello kiddos:

I'm quite tempted about getting a Palm Centro and the unlimited data plan from sprint which gives you speed where I live(Palm Beach Gardens FL) from 800kbps and up...As I understand to get the max speed when tethering a N800 with a cell you need BT 2.0 , the issue is that the Centro and most phones have BT 1.0 or 1.2. My question is what would it take to change from BT 1.2 to 2.0(on the cell) to get max speed, a hardware or software update?

In addition, what percentage of the speed is lost when tethering through BT 1.2? If possible share examples and stories.

Thank you,
Scrappy898

P.S: Can't wait for the n810

For surfing the web over a 3g cell phone network I would say it shouldn't matter. I had a Nokia 770 (BT 1.2) and Nokia N800 (BT 2.0) and got the same ~400-500kbps off Verizon in downtown NYC. I think BT 1.2 maxes out at ~900kbps (1 Mbit/s). I don't think any 3g network will get near 900k, but HSPA and 4G are a different story.

The Bluetooth spec version alone is not enough to specify the max data rate. All new Bluetooth devices are tested to the 2.0 spec. You need to look for support for EDR. This is usually described as BT v2.0+EDR (with EDR support) and BT v2.0-EDR (without EDR). There are many new Nokia and other phones that support EDR.

I get about 350-420KB/sec on my HSDPA handset, but Bluetooth on my N800 is limited to about 50KB/sec, which is kinda disappointing. But, still, a lot better than EDGE.

Wow, I had no idea HSDPA was so much faster than EVDO. Your 400KB/s is eight times faster than my 400kbps. How much is that, and is there a monthly bandwich cap?

I get ~300Kbps from my Verizon EVDO connection over BT to my N800. The same connection averages ~600-700Kbps tethered to my laptop over USB.

$20/month Cingular (now AT&T) MediaMAX 200. As far as I can tell, the data usage is unlimited. Though I imagine that wouldn't pan out if I pushed it.

It's not technically a tethering plan, but they seem to turn a blind eye to it (not that they could tell unless I started using BT or somesuch).
