Snapdragon is a a System-on-Chip and in fact it's using the Cortex A8 core. My fault was that in the post before I should have compared the OMAP3 and the Snapdragon, which both use the Cortex A8 core.

Yes, I'm afraid of this, too.

They have done a great job at Maemo 5. But if I play a little bit with the open part of MeeGo Handset I don't understand why they are gone a step backwards. Yes, every vendor could create their own UI and Nokia will certain create their own. But the bosses has changed and perhaps the new one without maemo prior knowledge will simply point at the Symbian UI and say: "We have solved this at Symbian different. This is not the Nokia way. We want similar UI's because our customers are buying a Nokia device and they should have a sense of home."

And about the Dual Core Discussion. Normally I won't need a multicore design. Expect one situation: Surfing at the web, watching videos at youtube and then... a important incomming call without the chance of answering the call just in time because of the full loaded CPU.

Snapdragon uses Qualcomm's own Scorpion core. It's ARMv7 instruction-compatible with the Cortex A8 core, but it's NOT the same thing.

That's almost never the case. The anaphylactic shock the N900 sometimes gets when receiving a call or message are due to applications being swapped in/out. More cores would not help it, only more memory.

On a side note, now that you mention surfing, there IS one benefit to multicore - namely that you can banish Flash to a core and let it suck juice there without grinding the whole system to a halt. The flip side is of course the shorter battery life, but hey... can't have it all.

to further add to the cons mentioned from page 1-7, IMHO, the leaked images in the past (the one that looks like a macbook pro) doesn't really look any better than an E7. different, yes, but not any better.

it's probably just good that it got scrapped.

I don't need a phone to feel special. And I don't "love" my phone, I love my wife. We use the word "love" in a different and more appropriate context.

The Snapdragon is NOT based on the Cortex A8.

Qualcomm licenced the ARM v7 instruction set, but not the Cortex-A8 design - the former being a much cheaper licence than the latter, and then Qualcomm went on to design their own core that was mostly compatible with the ARMv7 architecture. But it's certainly not a Cortex A8, as Qualcomm haven't licensed this design from ARM.

The Qualcomm implementation of ARMv7 is generally considered to be less efficient than the ARM Cortex-A8 (which is why Snapdragon has to run at a faster clock to remain competitive) and the TI OMAP3 version of the Cortex-A8 is laid out by hand and not using macros so is generally considered the most efficient implementation of the Cortex-A8 to date.

Add it all up and clock-for-clock an OMAP3 outperforms a Snapdragon, both in terms of raw computational ability and also power consumption.

If that's not enough, they can always resurrect metalayer-crawler to keep that second core occupied.

dont agree... appmanager is bad designed thats why it dogslow.

apt-get in console doesnt eat upp all cpu when install apps etc...

so again this can be done by optimize the code instead.
