That happened because you tried to run it from a root shell (notice the # in the prompt).

To run programs on the N900 from the Terminal you have to be 'user', not root.
So either go back to the 'user' shell or type "su - user" from the root shell and then run the command (i.e. 'xournal' in this case).

Can the toolbar at the bottom be moved to the top in order to prevent pressing the buttons when trying to write on the N900 ?

Help! I can't update xournal, and it won't start either. The other day, it showed up in extras-devel, and I upgraded it, only it said it could not install. So I came to the conclusion that it had reverted to the old version. Now when I try to start it up, it tries to start, but when it goes to open the "paper," it closes again.

Any ideas? I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall, and hopefully that will do it.

Update: I fixed it. I tried doing an apt-get install, and several libraries were having issues:

libopenjpeg2
libpoppler5
libpoppler-glib4
xournal

Each fone was missing a file in /usr/share/doc, and would barf when it tried to optify the package. I had to manually uninstall each (dpkg -P) and reinstall them. Now all seems to work...

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I'm looking to change the desktop icon but can't find where it is located...anyone know where?

Nevermind, found it.

By the way, I love this app, Thanks again for the hard work on this!

Here is the log of my monorail removal using "apt-get remove monorail" on the command line ... I just removed it and nothing else and no reboot/reinstall of anything and xournal started working
Code:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  monorail
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
After this operation, 287kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
(Reading database ... 43688 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing monorail ...
Removing `diversion of /usr/lib/libsharingdialog.so.0.0.0 to /usr/lib/funsharing/libsharingdialog.so.0.0.0.real by monorail'
Possible the diversion of the libsharingdialog by monorail is the underlying problem ... xournal is not happy with the one under /usr/lib/funsharing/

The sharing plugin dev files were made available to developers a bit late, so many went for hacks to be able to use the plugins.
May be Monorail hasn't been updated and still uses it's own hack that is incompatible with other apps (like Xournal)

Hi everyone,

I've uploaded a new version to extras-devel right now. It should be soon available for download on your N900 if you have Extras Devel enabled.

There are quite a few changes, I will write a changelog soon.
Notable:

Layers
Pen thickness (click on the Pen Icon)
Pages (click on the Hand icon)
Basic Colors

When you click on the Pen/Hand/Color icon, you will see a new toolbar with options for that element:

Pen-> Very Thin | Thin | Medium | Thick | Very Thick
Hand-> New Page Before | Delete Page | New Page After | New Page End | Prev Page (the rounded arrow icon ) | Next Page (the ugly pen icon )
Color -> Black | Blue | Green | Red | Yellow | Orange | Magenta

Layers can be selected from the Main Menu.

I am now working on the icon set to have a unified one at least.
But please DO test this version and report ANY issues.

PS: there's also a Open Background menu item now, it allows you to open (and annotate) supported file types as background (namely images).

Thank you!
Aniello

Request you to please work on the pdf functionality so that we can zoom on and wrap text so that we can enjoy pdf on higher zoom levels and still read every text on the screen without scrolling and panning

Don't forget to search / add bugs here:

https://bugs.maemo.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Xournal

Thank you again
