Possibly, but I didn't say that. 1) Someone pointed out that Nokia is severely lacking good engineers because the bigger, more successful players have most of them. Someone else responded that not ALL engineers would like to work at Microsoft, Facebook or Google. I pointed out how obtuse that response seems to be to the original point being made. 2) I pointed out that most people would suffer from a case of hemorrhoids. Nokia's culture has managed to attract the rest that seem to enjoy pain.

It's not impossible. They might also really like hemorrhoids. Seriously, there ARE people who enjoy pain and don't suffer from it. You HAVE to wonder why anyone would subject themselves to Nokia's customer service and support and then come back for another, don't you?

But why bother? Lets be realistic and say Nokia gets 10% market share. That is about 30? million handsets each other year, or every third year?. It will be around 10-15 million handsets per year, and at what cost and risk? Wouldn't it be better to use that capital (money, people and recourses) to strengthen the rest of the world where Nokia already is selling 450 million devices each year. The market in China and India is worth many times what the US market is, and Nokia is already there but need to be stronger, much stronger.

Margin. Last I checked, high end hardware can have margins of over 75%. I'd be amazed if the margin on the hundreds of millions of handsets sold elsewhere was 1%, excluding the few who buy the high end handsets in those regions.

Nokia is not a software vendor, though it bundles stuff - sometimes own, sometimes carrier, sometimes subcontracted, sometimes who knows... If you take into account Qt, that stuff runs under the hood of many pretty popular apps, even Google's. And anyway, MeeGo should not depend on Nokia providing 'world class apps' because no other platform does it either. Nokia with Intel need to provide the hw, tooling and appealing developer friendly Qt/MeeGo ecosystem and the developers can do their 'world class stuff' (it's not like Google or Apple wrote all the good stuff in the AppStore and Marketplace).

I don't think Nokia should. Sure, they can probably gather 10% of the American market, that's approximately 1.8 million out of the 180 million or so at the moment going by cellphone subscribers numbers only and not growth or potential, if they put their minds to it... but why do it?

Nokia has shown that they don't need the US market. So why start now? I personally do not think they should.

Find that 10% loss of global market elsewhere.

Name 5 'applications' that are world-class from Nokia, i.e an application thats better than anything out there. I can only name a few

- microb browser. Probably the best mobile browser out there.
- Nokia internet radio. Pretty cool, works as advertised.
???

I can name numerous that are simply dreadful when compared the the competition
Nokia mail, Symbian web browser, Symbian/Maemo picture gallery, Maemo Music player, Calendar, Nokia maps (not even close to google maps) etc etc

I seriously don't think Nokia has the software talent, good engineers are hard enough to hire these days with Goolgle, facebook, microsoft gobbling up all the good ones...
Did you forget Maemo5 Phone App and the Maemo5 Application Manager. Those 2 are the crappiest piece of software I have ever seen in my entire life.

Btw, that's not saying that Nokia doesn't have the right engineering talent. The crappiest outcome is probably because the right people are not in the right place. It happens quite often (in big organisations) actually!

I think that if Nokia makes any Android or WP7 phones, No one will believe they have a long term commitment to Symbian or Meego.
It would be the death knell of both those OSs.

Which 'Nokia Maps' or 'Ovi Maps' are you referring to? The one for Maemo, or the much superior one for S60, or the apparently even better one for S^3?

So you're saying there were no good ones at Qt?

Nokia’s MWC 2011 Plans Go Live – Don’t Expect Major Announcements

http://thehandheldblog.com/2011/01/3...ndheld+Blog%29

That doesn't sound good...
At the very least I was hoping for an announcement for the N9 and maybe Q3 availability?
Too much going on with S^3 for my liking...
