This was decided BEFORE Elop became CEO. He's merely executing on an earlier decision.

About as interesting as differences between Dell and HP Wintel desktops.

This! Gimme source to BME and PHONET and never speak to me again. Nokia have broken my heart

Brrrrr....typical absurd CEO decision ****. Wondering about the details. "primary smartphone strategy" might mean that there is a secondary strategy? Did the owners of Nokia really want this to happen when they appointed Elop? Thowing millions of money just down the drain right when it comes to frutition? (QT/MeeGO). The whole of Finland will be in a state of shock.
And did anyone of the these guys ever look at the incredible sorry state of WP7 for developers right now? There is not even an offline database engine last time I checked!
OTOH, glad for C# and better services than what Ovi ever offered.
But this might also create a BIG opportunity for others to pickup Meego and finish creating the alternate platform it is, without being hindered by the Nokia behemoth.

Microsoft doesn't make great OS.

Besides, this means that the computer world will be reduced to bystanders in a titanic battle of monopolists. What are they fighting for:?
The battle to own us.

Look at the bright side, this could get some nifty intergration with the pc windows.
We don't know exactly what Nokia and Microsoft are planning, but with nokia's hardware skills and Microsoft's software, something nice might come out of the good 'ol magic hat.
Most of the people think "Microsoft is eeeeeevil and must burn", but give it a chance.(There isn't a damn device out... so you cant judge)

As much as I like Maemo with its open source elements, I'm quite curious about what device nokia will make with wp7

Taken from http://www.techknots.com/mobiles/wp7-limitations/. Although MS has spoken of improving the OS through updates, it's still hard to be optimistic... Compared to the functionality of the N900 this is a huuuge step back.

As if Maemo was perfect. And with Microsoft, there's at least hope that updates will come regularly, with Maemo it was a horror (I just mention the email-bug in PR1.2 that Nokia fixed months later in 1.3). Some bugs even don't get adressed at all although users want it for years now (e.g. PBAP).
Who says Meego or Meego support would be better? I don't think so.
