Tell me why I should buy a Nokia WP7 over a Sprint/HTC Evo or a Verizon/Motorola Droid?
I wouldn't.

I own an Android based phone, had the N900, been testing a WP7 for the last week.

Android isn't as much freedom as Maemo. It's more freedom than iOS. And WP7 feels as restricted as iOS, but with even less features presently.

I wouldn't suggest that you go anywhere but where you're more comfortable.

Sorry, Sachin, but the only think Nokia believes in is its bottom line. If Open Source is good for Nokia's bottom line, then Nokia believes in Open Source. As soon as Nokia figured out that Open Source did not work for them as they said they believed, then they stop believing.

With today's announcements it is clear that Nokia doesn't believe in Open Source to deliver the goods.

The cool thing about Ovi Music was that it was DRM free and plain download, so it works on everything.. I imagine zune is the usual DRM-plagued nonsense that requires proprietary windows-only software to get songs out of?

You seem to be a very educated guy....Do you feel that Nokia's move from a Open powerful OS to a restrictive less powerful one is a good move?

If they didn't put money in Open Source - why they believe in some profit in this? I am just basing on poor support for N900... it seems like it is done by enthusiasts only. At least Nokia doesn't pay for it.

Mac support is also there.

I do have to say that the DRM is a problem. None of my songs do have any DRM - I transitioned from iTunes (they dropped it 2+ years ago) but I have a collection of my own music in CD format like no other.

So Zune just basically is my software that I use to play music whilst on my computer.

This isn't going to happen. You're quite right about the heads and the places where the sun doesn't shine, but with Nokia dropping MeeGo as it's next big platform, MeeGo is dead. Nokia is going to get plenty of problems getting WinPhone7 to work and they do not need the MeeGo distraction.

MeeGo might now become a way to spot talent from hard-to-get-at places, but that's it.

Oh... and it's not the death of Qt either - Visual Studio has Qt extensions.
Oh yes, Qt is dead too. Consider: Qt was the new platform unifying Symbian with its massive user base and MeeGo with its promising new capabilities. Nokia touted Qt to all mobile developers in the entiere world as the place to be next year so why not start developing right now and make big money.

Nokia has just screwed all those people by murdering Qt, instead of putting it on top of WinPhone 7. Qt's role is now to be Symbian's and MeeGo's API. But Symbian is dead and MeeGo is dead, so Qt is dead.

But wait, there is more. Nokia is now also subsidizing the development of a unifying and free PC platform, making it possible to target multiple markets with a single set of sources. Yes, that is very much Nokia's core business.

So, Nokia is going to drop Qt support very soon. With luck, they create a new TrollTech, but where is that company going to make it';s money from, now Qt is LGPL'led?

Nope, Qt is dead. A community might be created to try and revive the beast, but now it is dead.

I'm not educated... just love gadgets, been a Linux user since the mid-90's, somehow kept up with Windows, use a Mac, and I piss off folks in these parts since I've signed up somehow.

If you want my true opinion about this move, it's backwards. I'd have to speculate (read: guess) that it means that MeeGo still isn't ready for primetime. But the move to WP7, it's just so very backwards.

Nokia traded in a MeeGo 1.x (first retail release) for Windows Phone 7 which basically is a "first retail release" since Microsoft broke all compatibility with Windows Mobile 6.x and prior. Both are unfinished in my opinion, and it's akin to picking a horse of the same age, of the same level of maturity and somehow I think it's a real gamble.

In this case, Nokia can task Microsoft to get the stuff that people actually want - like copy and friggin' paste. But at the same time, they now have to wait on Microsoft to deliver it - which breaks all of Nokia's prior culture.

I'm not a fan of this decision one bit. But you won't catch me whining about it. I just think it's a bit too short-sighted of Nokia to go this route. But if MeeGo can't ship, final in say 3 months, this does make sense. I'd consider this a patch for now.

I am shocked and saddened. It does look like the well-planned, inside job of killing one of the most innovative companies out there.

Can we start some kind of online petition and send the link to whoever you possibly can? Make it viral? At least be heard? In this day and age much is possible.

Also, look at the stock, it's already plumetting.

The Elop guy should be removed ASAP. Bring back the innovative Finns!

PS: My heart goes out to those brave Nokia employees not afraid to show their protest. Thank you for your hard work and good luck.
