Despite what people say about Maemo or the N900 - it WAS a hit! Just not quite as big as Nokia wanted it to be.

I mean the N900 can't compete with iOS and Android fart apps crap - it's an intelligent device for intelligent people, how many people using iOS and Android can say they know about openOffice 3.1, debian, ssh, samba? Not many, sure there are a few who do, but percentage-wise about 10% or less is my guess.

The N900? Probably at least 50% of users know about ssh, samba etc. and the apps that are fully featured apps rather than one man band apps like they are on android and iOS.

So what does this mean?

Well the people who bought the N900 (me included - on preorder!), ain't going to buy the WP7 crap, I ain't going to touch anything with WP7 on it.

And the rest of the dumb people? Well they'll be amused by iOS and Android's flashing lights.

The only idiots that may buy it are the Americans - even then they will probably by Android and iOS devices anyway.

In short WP7 is the wrong way to - I can understand that dropping symbian is perhaps the right way to go, but dropping Meego? I don't think so. I was waiting for the Nokia N9 like everyone else on this forum and if it isn't going to materialise it looks like I'll be holding onto my N900 for a little longer and jumping ship to Android.

Elop? You f*cking m0r0n!

@rash.m2k: being intelligent also means that you can understand an issue from multiple perspectives.

an expert with a one track mind is usually called a skilled person, or a specialist at best.

I would have been more blunt. his post is a perfect example of why Nokia is in this situation in the first place.

I base my logic on the fact that Microsoft has consistently failed to make a mark on the mobile market. And that their eco-system is generally based on a monopoly - and closed (not as much as Apple).

Sure Nokia will bring a lot of ideas to the table - but they have never created a WM device - and thus they have no skilled engineers.

It's all win-win for M$, Nokia licenses their OS, they train their engineers with MS software, and their will be other companies creating apps for MS (good for Microsfoft).

Nokia on the other hand will have to rely solely on MS, and have no other high-end OS for their phones.

The only winner is MS.

I DO understand this from a other perspective - but it's clear Google were begging Nokia to come to them.

If Nokia wanted they could EASILY twist googles arm and have 50% input on the direction of the platform. WP7 is unproven - and this is a safe bet based on their previous attempts.

Thanks for the summary, very interesting.

About not being blackmailed - well, of course he has to say that if he wants to keep his job. The fact remains that Vanjoki was top pick, evidenced by how ambitiously he spoke about the future of Nokia all the way up to the election, and then at the last minute the "second pick" outsider (according to Nokia: chosen out of a group of three in the final round with no pressure from outside) gets the job prompting the hitherto enthusiastic Nokia veteran Vanjoki to hand in his resignation (as did Nokia's head of Meego shortly afterwards).

Before this surprise election last September who ever even heard of that guy Elop?

There was an article about the benefit Nokia would gain from this - and Elop said reduce s/w dev costs and other crap. But also denied that this was a 'bribe' and said it would be a business transaction and so would need to pay for licensing.

Actually, it's a car. They're part of the automobile consortium that's backing MeeGo, and they've been building theirs from the ground up. That's what's taking so long.
