Hi. I use and like Last FM to play Internet music. I've noticed that there is a Linux version of their lastfm software for Ubuntu (it is already available as open source), and can't imagine that it would take a lot of effort to port to the N800 - probably mainly requiring 'Hildon-isation' - of course I could be talking out of my a** here, so please forgive me if I am.

Are there any clever open source gurus around who might fancy this as a challenge ?!?

I do think that this would be a really nice application to have available for the N800 and it would help broaden the appeal of the tablet. What do others think ?

Regards
Steve.

You can use last.fm via the lastfmproxy. You need to install xterm, mplayer and python on your device. Follow the instructions on the lastfmproxy site to configure the program. Then run the main.py from xterm. You can listen to the stream by typing "http://localhost:1881/lastfm.mp3" in the address field of mplayer. You can control the player using the web browser on page "http://localhost:1881".

Many thanks to both of you for your replys. Rather than wait, I will give the proxy option a go as I have most of the items already installed. Thanks again.

Funny thing happened first time I ran Vagalume on my 770 w/ 2006
OS. I clicked Vagalume (it installed to the "extras" folder) and Canola opened! I closed Canola before trying to get it to stream Last Fm. I then opened Vagalume and was able to stream from Last Fm. So, I'm wondering if it's possible to actually use Canola to stream from Last FM. This would be better as Vagalume doesn't allow one to pause a track and it has no volume feature, like Canola.
Any way to do it? It should work as I can stream other internet radio stations with Canola.

The official LInux client is not easy to port, as it's written using the Qt framework rather than GTK+ (the Skype client for Maemo is probably an almost-complete rewrite)

yeah, most things work fine. but the gui could get improved much more ... most things are by far to complicated.

the ubuntu client is a nice example of how it is much better...
