The download stats - I know from even my time/experience that I downloaded the same thing multiple times due to either reformats, updates that went wonky or me screwing up my own install and starting back again with a new install.

So those numbers are a bit inflated. And in some cases, not wholly reliable - some of the best apps got minimum downloads for some reason.
I think lma's intent was to look for updates over a 24-hour period -- since most N900s are still running the default 24-hour update interval, that should get close, maybe filter for unique IPs as well to avoid double-counting manual updates or tweaked intervals (but also penalizing multiple N900s behind a NAT)..

Of course, not all N900s have extras enabled -- the SSU repo would be the ideal one to get data from, but AFAIK that's completely Nokia-controlled, so we may not be able to get stats from it..

Then why hasn't that been done (to my knowledge) in the past?

I'd love to know a number. Tired of really not knowing even an educated guess.

Yes we all know this that is why i said IF it is adapted for the N900 meaning its hardware and its obvious deficiency.

You will probably never find out because Nokia are somewhat embarresed of the actual figure but that dont change none because at the end of the day if they sold 1 or 1 million units they still ripped us off BIG time and that will take some getting over i am sure.

I said Nokia sold 700ooo n900s,
but lately I have been thinking it was probably more like 900000 units.
There are a lot more than the 50000 or so of us who make noise,
to be sure (not just referring to TMO but those who simply use it
without ever darkening the door here, but are noted in blogs, etc.)

For sure they did not break a million units though.

Certainly. Perhaps my question should have been something like:Which OS would you prefer for your replacement smartphone after you have done with your N900.

On the second thought, I think this is rather an educated guess that looks close enough to the real number. Thanks again for your feedback.
