Damn you're right!!

what you need to do is put your finger is EXACTLY on the menu border (make sure no item is highlighted, and it's not outside the menu so it won't disappear)
then you can just lift your finger and the menu will stay

but still, I'd prefer the way I described above. since this behaviour is uncomfortable, especially when in haste

Yep. First things that really made me scratch my head. Itīs so weird that your finger (right hand and about 4/5 screen when it popups right under it) is basically blocking the view. Thought that "Okey" *sighs*. Small grievance but little things that really matter. First I thought that should I write bug report but then I thought that If I really really really have to say things like that to UI design people then certainly there is some pretty wrong people there doing their stuff.(things like these make me think that there should be some Steve****ingjobs screaming to people how to do simple stuff right)

So to have popup menu in place where you can see stuff immediately you have to use 1/5 right side of screen. Yesss.

Never. I tried hard, but it never works.

Both ways work
-Hold stylus on screen and wait for popup
-->when popup is on screen then move stylus to frame of popup so that nothing is selected. If you move it outside of popup then it vanishes

-Hold stylus on screen and let it stay there and select item

btw. Screen selection seems to react bit differently to finger and stylus.
Also you can test how it works by just keeping your finger on screen and slightly tilting head of your finger. It selects first item really easily..at least on my N900.

But in the end itīs not easy as it should be. To me it means that I have to concentrate on really simple task and it works 90% time which means that I do not relay on it as it should be 100% safe.

if i recall, the built-in file manager behaved correctly in a previous PR update (i think it was PR 1.1). they changed that in PR 1.2 to be like what the was described in the first post. annoying actually.

problem is when people keep finger slanted while part of finger is touching the first option, that option gets selected. a blue highlight shos its selected. it should all be black. try holding with finger more or so parallel to screen. you will never repeat your problem. if blue highlight is there then ur finger needs to be less slanted.

hope this helps

Yes, that's how it works, but that's not how it should work.

What I'd expect is:
  • Hold and wait for pop-up;
  • lift stylus/finger off the screen so that pop-up is fully visible; nothing is selected, pop-up remains;
  • tap on screen again to select item in pop-up;

But... that is exactly how it works

It can also work by holding your finger/stylus on list and select on release.

The thing is I always worked it by lifting finger/stylus and tapping to select

I've used both ways, and I agree that it can be tricky finger-wise.

Do you really mean keeping the finger parallel to the screen? Not perpendicular...?

PS: the thread title isn't very useful - "context menu selection UI behaviour complaints" would be more indicative. I can see you're getting it off your chest a bit..

yeah, already figure it out on my earlier post thanks to reinob's post. finger/stylus should be on the menu border frame when you lift your finger/stylus

but still out of several attempts I always end up with menu being disappear/item accidentally selected

what he meant is, even if your finger on top of a selection/highlighted item, it shouldn't be automatically selected when you lift your finger
I'd prefer this way: first, long press, show up the popup menu. release finger ANYWHERE, and tap once more to select the item
