Hey guys-

I was planning on buying my dad an n800 for christmas; he uses the computer for little things and this seems like it would fit his niche perfectly. I've read the n800 supports two 2gb cards, however I see some have cards up to 16gb. I planned on getting a memory card when ordering the device. My question is, will the device notice a card higher than 2 gigs stock, straight out of the box, or does it have to be modified? If an update is required, is it a community made update, or an official nokia update. If it does not require any kind of modification, what type of card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, the new firmware supports up to 8GB SDHC cards.

like syntra said, if you have the latest firmware on the device you can use up to 8gb SDHC, at least that's what i've tested up to with no probs, others may have gone higher. Anyway, your pops will have to just update the device when he gets it out of the box, nokia software updater is easy to install and follow so he shouldnt have a problem with this, once he's done he's all set and if he has any problems he can always come here and ask! hope he likes it

Correction, the firmware really supports up to anything you can possibly buy. There's no limitation in the Linux kernel used in the N800 for this, by that I mean that if it's possible to produce an SDHC card with capacity X then the N800 tablet _will_ support it. Save for bugs (hardware or software), none of which are currently known. As for current SDHC cards, several people are already happily using 16GB Patriot SDHC cards.

You just have to be careful to flash the N800 with the latest firmware if it doesn't already have it, because of a potential corruption problem with SD cards in general (although it affected SDHC cards more).

Hi folks, I'm new to this forum, and look forward to an awesome time learning from you guys.

Some questions on the previous posts here ...

1. Where can I get the latest firmware for N800?

2. Can I use 1 x SDHC card and 1 x SD card at the same time in the N800, will there be a conflict?

3. If answer to Qn 2 is Yes, which card is recommended for the inside, and which for the outside (as in the slot behind the kickstand?)

It's a kind of automatic process when you use the Nokia update wizard software. Keep in mind you should do a backup before (excluding the external cards contents)

2. Can I use 1 x SDHC card and 1 x SD card at the same time in the N800, will there be a conflict?
As far as I know, yes.

3. If answer to Qn 2 is Yes, which card is recommended for the inside, and which for the outside (as in the slot behind the kickstand?)
I think that there are no difference; despite that, I have read on the forum that the external slot handles a different voltage than the internal one, so maybe other member could advice about.

Go to this site, and download the N800 update wizard:

http://europe.nokia.com/A4305010

Install it, run it, follow the instructions and you will get the latest firmware. Make sure you back up your data first though.

Incidentally, the brand new OS 2008 firmware is due out in December, which upgrades to a new version of the tablet's operating system. It has a much better browser, a more finger-friendly interface and various other enhancements.

OS 2008 is the same operating system used in the new N810 tablet, and the upgrade effectively turns the N800 into an N810.

You can use any combination of cards in any slots you want. SD, MMC, SDHC... anything.

There are no conflicts and no restrictions.

Thanks, I am awiating for OS2008 as well. But since I just purchased the N800 (2nd hand) and have no data inside, I will do as you advised and get the download wizard.

The previous user of my N800 had a number of simple applets installed, I suppose I won't lose them during the updating of OS?

Unfortunately you'll lose anything extra you installed. When upgrading OS2007 versions you could do a backup first (in the control panel), then restore afterwards (the upgrade would detect any backup available on the internal card), this would re-instate your application manager repository list (so you can pick and install what you had installed before), but not the actual applications. The restore would also reinstate any network configuration, bluetooth pairing etc. you might have.

I don't know how the situation will be when upgrading from OS2007 to OS2008, but possibly much the same. (Later upgrades of OS2008 are supposed to be less "destructive").

By the way Amadeus, you can also use the update wizard to install OS2008 when it becomes available.

If you mean extra applets on top of the stuff that comes with it, then yes as TA-t3 mentioned above these will disappear.

You can back up all your data to a card, but you can't (yet) back up any installed applications.
