I'd have to say it's sad that you're holding out faith that drivers for the N900 will ever be improved. The N900 is a great phone; or great internet tablet... or great mobile computer. Whatever you wish to call it.
But to be honest, you have to look at how each OS caters to a totally different crowd.
And if anything... it sounds like Android didn't suit your needs. That's fine; Maemo 5 is pretty damn impressive. But at the same time, it's also dwindling to only forum support very quickly. Support isn't as important when the parts that you do need may only be surrounding staid parts like SSH, a browser that gives you proper HTML rendering but Flash 9.4... and a Linux OS that does that most admins love to death.
But if you want more than that - you're S.O.L. I've used both the Nexus S and the N900... the screen alone on the Nexus S beats the N900 in that regard. The 512mb of RAM versus 256mb... and no rootfs issues to deal with... but it's still Android. Less open than Maemo, more open than iOS.
All are targeting different folks. And somehow... that's overlooked.

Having used both phone, i can clearly say N900 is still a lot better than nexus s. Yes it does not have amoled capacitive touch screen and yes it does not have 1Ghz stock processor and 512 ram but when you look it as a whole, i believe N900 nails nexus s easily. The whole maemo experience is a lot better than android (i believe). In maemo multitasking is so easy and you can clearly see what each task is. Where as in android, it just shows what apps were open recently.
Ill give you another small example. Even though nexus s has flash 10.2, try running a youtube video on its browser(not the app) and do the same with N900 (which has flash 9), you will see still with a slower processor and lack of latest flash, N900 performs better. Nexus s browser gets so laggy that it starts to get annoying. Nexus s's browser is not even close to as good as N900's.
I believe if N900 drivers can be somehow improved (i know they are closedsource) then N900 will easily be the best mobile in market. But at the end of the day, one of the things that matter the most is which phone has more support. I think google does take care of its phone really well as compared to nokia and thats why android is getting so much popular. I was so disappointed to see the lack of support from Nokia for this amazing phone, N900.
Let me know what do you guyz think?
PS: N900 has a big plus point that it has full qwerty keyboard
