Again, not sure what you are talking about. A little over a year ago, it was announced that Intel and Nokia were going to combine their Linux-based tablet OSs (Moblin and Maemo) under the name of MeeGo, managed by the Linux Foundation. There is nothing "vaporware" about that, especially since that in that year we now have 3 releases.

All i am saying is the web portrayed it as vaporware, there is endless info on this term if you google it, here is a few ok.

"While I have not played with Maebo, I really liked Moblin 2.1's interface on a 10" netbook. One can clearly see the GUI is optimized for the limited real estate offered by this class of devices. While at this point MeeGo is vaporware (much like HipHop for PHP, still MIA as of today), the first project release is scheduled for Q2 2010. I hope MeeGo has native VM support so it runs without workarounds like those required by Moblin. Can't wait to play with it!"

Intel CEO says Nokia quit MeeGo because of financial reasons, to find new partners for its OS

During a conference call, Intel CEO Paul Otellini claimed Nokia abandoned the MeeGo project because of financial reasons.

He further expressed his surprise that Nokia's CEO sided with Windows Phone rather than Android, and claimed MeeGo was the best option, also noting it would be hard for Nokia to differentiate itself from other manufacturers in the WP ecosystem:

"I wouldn't have made the decision he [Elop] made, I would probably have gone to Android if I were him. MeeGo would have been the best strategy but he concluded he couldn't afford it.

It would have been less hard on Android, on MeeGo he could have done it."

Despite Nokia's decision to side with WP, Paul Otellini remains optimistic that Intel will find new partners for MeeGo:

"We will find other partners. The carriers still want a third ecosystem and the carriers want an open ecosystem, and that's the thing that drives our motivation."

MeeGo definitely looked promising, and probably still does so, but, understandably, questions have been raised about its future since Nokia joined the Windows Phone bandwagon. What's your opinion on this one - do you think MeeGo has a future in the smartphone/tablet business?

Up untill last year Meego was only known to the few and actually this very forum brought MeeGO to the forefront.

You know what, i think this forum is full of dreamers (and yes your entitled to dream) and not many who realistically see this for what it is.

In my heart i want MeeGo to be everything everyone wants but in my head is a far different story.

First, I said that I didn't know what you were talking about, not that you didn't. Second, the post that you linked to was dated Febuary of last year, barely any time after the announcement of MeeGo, so he was misusing the term. A better use for the term is for something like Duke Nukem Forever (well, at least until recently when we actually started to see some signs that it would actually come out, where it therefore wasn't vaporware anymore.)

As for the second part, certainly there is going to be questions about how Nokia's current strategy is going to affect MeeGo. Fortunately, MeeGo's fate wasn't solely tied to Nokia. Yes, we are probably a little ways off from finding out if MeeGo will be a viable platform, but such things take time and I think your expectations have been unrealistic.

Oh, I think there are plenty of cynical people on this forum, especially those who have gone through multiple iterations of Maemo. I don't think people's expectations have been out of line.

If anything, you seem to be the dreamer, expecting that a year of development is enough to make MeeGo a consumer-ready OS for the N900. Obviously, it seems workable now, since there are those who say that a lot of things do work.

My expectations are very realistic in that i doubt we will get a port of MeeGo to the N900 that will be anything like what it will be like on future devices whoever brings them out.
The N900 does lack speed and ram and looking at the way this is going it seems the whole concept will be built around better superior devices than ours.
The version we get will be a cut down of what it will be like on future devices thats for sure because of hardware disadvantages and closed components.

I do not listen to words any more because of the way Nokia promised us and pulled the plug, i am very sad and sometimes angry that i paid top money for the N900 and to be let down by a huge company like Nokia for sure got my back up.

I speak my mind, many don't like it but that is me.

Dreamer i am most definitly not ha.

Remember we have had all this talk before about what will be, what will happen etc etc and it just never did that is the top and bottom of it.

Dont listen to fancy wraparounds because the end result is often very far from the dream picture that is painted prior.

We WILL get MeeGo in a more substantial form on the N900 than it is at the moment that seems to be on the cards now so we wait and see.

Kinda a "no duh" statement. Technology always moves on and you always take advantage of whatever future hardware offers you.

But, that is all beside the point, because the main question is if MeeGo will offer the N900 user advantages over Maemo 5 that will make it worthwhile. That right now is still uncertain. As others have said from the beginning, unless we get an official release from Nokia for the N900 (unlikely), we will likely lose all of the closed-source applications Maemo currently offers. The question is, will there be enough from the MeeGo community to replace that? Time will tell. Same goes with MeeGo's performance on N900 hardware.

I'm not sure what you thought you were getting promised by Nokia, but most of us at the time of release could read the tea leaves that the N900 probably would have a relatively short lifespan with Maemo 6 (at the time) on the horizon. Many of us knew that there was no guarantee that the N900 would get an OS refresh even before MeeGo and before Nokia changed CEOs and changed plans accordingly.

Yet, I still bought because I felt the phone fit my needs, and it continues to fill those needs quite well. I'm just glad that a lot of the tablet know-how of Maemo won't be lost because of corporate interests. I have hope for MeeGo, not for my current phone, but potentially a phone (or tablet) in the future, and not necessarily by Nokia.
