I have a repo up at https://github.com/cb22/immoral - but be warned, the code is nowhere even near alpha level. I'm still playing around with design choices, etc...

My normal Python coding skills are OK - but my knowledge of QT and QML is terrible, first time ever using them. Except horrible code in those areas

To all the ideas above - I'm keeping track, and once the base has gotten to a sufficent maturity, I'll probably start implementing things like GPG support, etc.

Agreed, this'd be fantastic.

If you make the repository public I might work on this
You could always hack on Modest to add that in the meantime and get is shipped with the Community SSU :-)

Once it gets gpg support, you may expect a donation :-)

+1 to that.

Been making some nice progress lately - got a fully working POP3 backend so far. Messages are stored in a SQLite database and the text is fully indexed.

Here's what the message view GUI looks like at the moment... Don't know why the time is missing, but it's meant to be to the right of the subjects. Also, there should be a section header at the top, with the date. Need to do a bit of work to make that "sticky" (ie, it won't fly off the screen when you scroll past it, but stay there until the next one)

Also, where it says T Messages - U Unread, it should only do that for the first one. The rest will have the first line out the mail or so.

Suggestions welcome

Looks good

Could you also make the threaded view optional? I for one like to see my messages in the order the arrive, one by one

Also the "combined inbox".. does that mean that all accounts would be combined into one? If so, please also make that optional.

Can't wait to get my hands on this!

Of course - this isn't GNOME 3, I don't have a deep seated hatred for configuration options :P
(Funnily enough, I actually use GNOME 3...)

As for the combined inbox, it simply shows up like an "account" in the list of accounts, so you are free to select it, or whichever account you want.

The use of a Gmail-style "conversation" rather than fully threaded might be more appropriate: most people don't have complex subthreads to navigate, and see the discussion on bug #2674 for justifications against a fully-threaded view on the limited screen estate.

Great stuff - sooo frustrating not having a proper email client on the n900.

One suggestion, missing from all the existing clients I've tried: Option to limit the age of messages to download.

That GUI is quite basic still - my plan is to essentially hide any read messages in the threading view, replacing them with a "..." which will cut down quite a bit on wasted screen real estate.

As for the GMail style message view, 100%. when you click on a message (be the client in unthreaded or threaded view), it will open that message, and have something like (5 read) at the top of the the message, and (3 unread) at the bottom. Clicking on them will load the additional messages in the thread. If you've used the GMail Android client, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Yep - it's been quite high on my list. As someone who has a GMail account with thousands of messages in my inbox, modest is completly unusable.
