Hello! I'm a new in maemo, and wondering how to enter in sigle-user mode aka -S option to kernel on desktop. I just want to root only and no another users on device, without X and etc to have an ability to unmount /home...

p.s. sorry for my english...

I might be mistaken, but you should look into a kernel that has framebuffer supported enabled.
See here: http://maemo.org/packages/view/kernel-framebuffer/

The wiki is a good resource: http://wiki.maemo.org/Root_access

I'm not sure why you asking for runlevel 1, other than you wanting to change the root password. In which case you should just flash firmware onto the device (unless you have malicious intent of extracting data from a previous owner...)

Here is a good explanation why you probably don't wish to actually enter init 1: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=450206&postcount=8 on the NIT at least under Maemo.

Installing a different distro w/ single user mode is another story altogether: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyT9tA3tNOQ

Okay yeah not mounting /home is a good use for runlevel 1. That is certainly a tricky predicament. You can pass arguments when you flash into R&D mode but I'm not sure how about going about that. Tricky, tricky, tricky. I'm sure there is a "hack" to get this working but it's not going to be as simple as on a linux desktop/laptop environment. You are correct and definitely want to boot into runlevel 1 if possible.

well, to tell the truth, I want to write a script that will automatically reboot the device and create encrypted partitions on the spot /home and /home/MyDocs...

Quick question: This kernel is a normal one, not a power kernel version, right?

Power 46 by any chance? Does it have that one module that the bleeding edge wifi driver needs compiled with it? (I would figure it out from the source, but I can't do that at my skill level, nor do I know what the right, tech savvy place to look is - I also can't get the .debs to download to my computer for this package from the maemo.org/packages interface. I keep getting file not found errors, so I can't check the noob way by looking for the relevant module.)

Yes, power46, wifi works perfectly, but I don't think it so much necessary in this case...

I don't know and suppose NOT, because in the package date it says July 2010 and power kernel 46 was published few months later. But there is that 46 version with framebuffer enabled, and with more patches. However, it does NOT have bleeding edge wifi drivers compiled and source is different from simple power kernel 46, so it may be not possible to compile these drivers into it(you have to try yourself, but don't use power kernel 46 sources, get them from this modified version maintainer instead). They will be included in the future as far as I understand, so it won't be necessary to compile them by ourselves later (just install this kernel, bleeding edge precompiled I can't wait for that version when it comes out). Also, author of that package wants to be maintainer of power-kernel package in extras I guess, he contacted Titan even but he didn' reply. See http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=71879 for more info on that kernel I'm talking about.
