We need Debian for this huh? Is it a fully working software (fillmore)?

It's a native maemo 5 port, see
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=881920

If you've used the desktop version, you'll know it's not a full featured DAW but should serve as a good basis for a small device like the n900 - the basics are in. (Fillmore)

lmms seems a bit too cpu hungry on my pentium 4 ubuntu box so I have my doubts about it being usable on anything slower than that.

FLStudio 7 running under wine seems to be much more usable!

Can the n900 run wine?

also - can I use an external usb audio interface with something like an n900 ...

If the n900 can use an external audio interface and some usable dj/audio software
(thinking about mixxx, etc) I could get tempted to get one!

Of course production software would be nice too but even just usable dj software on such a portable device would tempt me.
(but I MUST be able plug in extra audio interface for that to be any real use - would need headphone and main audio out at the same time!)

Whilst I wouldn't rule anything out (there's some very clever bods with n900's in their hands), I'd be very pessimistic about expecting wine to run anything well on any ARM based mobile right now, but especially an audio sequencer that depends on sound running flawlessly.

This should be possible but isn't guaranteed for any particular device to work. Read some of the HostMode threads here on TMO to get a feeling for what is involved and pros/cons of plugging a USB device into your phone.

You know you could 'split' the headphone out to give you two connections to the same audio output - I know it's not the same as being able to monitor and output separately but it depends on exactly what your use case is to tell how important that is. Don't know if you want to monitor and play separate audio (e.g. preview something on headphones whilst playing something else out) or simply be able to hear what you are playing (same audio on both).
